Beginners, don't be put off

What I like best about this design is that it consists of many individual components that can be worked at my own pace, starting with the easier pieces as I build by quilling skills. Not even close to completing yet, but confident that I will be pleased.

About the Author
Ashish Amresh is an Assistant Professor in the College of Technology and Innovation and is leading the Computer Gaming curriculum initiatives at Arizona State University, where he founded the Computer Gaming Certificate and the Camp Game summer program. In the past he worked for Ronin Entertainment as Graphics Software Engineer known for Star Wars: Force Commander and Bruce Lee Quest of the Dragon. He has given numerous talks on using games in the class room for enhancing math and science learning. He is currently researching on how to improve learning of math word problems using games. Alex Okita is a professional computer game and film generalist with credits on games developed by Wideload Games, Inc., Bungie Software, Secret Level, Inc., Yuke's Co, Midway Games and many more. He worked for four years as an Unreal Engine 3 technical director for Black Point Studios and continues to work as an Unreal Contract Artist/Programmer on cutting edge projects for high profile clients. Alex lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Good for UT3 not UDK

I've been teaching 3D Game Prototyping for the past 10 years, and for the past 2 years have solely used the Unreal Game Engine in my classroom. I was psyched to find out last year that there was going to be a new Unreal manual that would be an alternative to bulky and hard to use Mastering Unreal Series of books.

This book was a big disappointment. For the past year, there has been a free version of the Unreal Engine Editor collectively known as UDK or the Unreal Development Kit. Prior to that was an older version known usually as the UT3 Editor and Engine. This book is on the older version of Unreal, not the newer one.

There is a belief that somehow there is little difference between the two development systems, which is not true. The bulk of my time prepping my Prototyping course has been revising all my handouts and lectures to work in UDK. Almost everything had to be changed. So if you want to use this book for UDK, expect to be frustrated, and be aware that although the author claims that this book can be used for both UT3 and UDK, the few references to UDK in the book are inaccurate, such as giving the wrong file extension for a UDK level file.

This book was also rushed. For example there is no index. My students and I have found mistakes and errors, and it just seems that someone wrote this book, but no one ever sat down to actually make sure that what is in the book makes sense. To its benefit, there is a good chapter on how to make a weapon in 3DS Max and bring it into Unreal, as well as some in depth character information. And one thing that the Mastering Unreal series has going for it is that the books include all the content discussed in the book. There is no CD with this new book and no downloadable content from the book's page on the publisher's site.

Regrettably there is no alternative book, so now there are 3 overpriced books that can partially assist you in learning how to use Unreal technology, and none of them are relevant to the latest version of the system that is available. If you are looking for reference information you can try going to [...], and trying to use the hodge podge of docs that are available. In the end the place my students go to most often, are the new UDK specific tutorials that are available from download from the udk site and available in streaming format from [...].

Unreal is a powerful technology and worth the effort, but just be prepared to spend a lot of time cursing and surfing the user forum for answers.

Frustrating, too general, and rushed

I understand that this is a book on the Unreal engine and not GIMP or 3DS Max, however the author too frequently relies on the crutch of "X is outside the scope of this book" to gloss over skills that it then dedicates an entire chapter to exploring. The result is that you can either ignore those chapters, or you can stop, learn the skills yourself somehow, and then return to the chapter at hand. Doing the latter gets frustrating really fast. As soon as you learn one skill and return to the book, the next paragraph throws another wrench at you that stops you in your place.

Don't get me wrong. Following this book will teach you new skills, but it may also drive you nutty in the process. I think the format would have worked much better in a video series, where the viewer could follow along with the instructor and pause/rewind as needed. Still images just don't go far enough to explain items that the author flies past.

Probably the best overall book for learning how to make games with the the Unreal Engine

This book is great if you are looking to learn how to mod and make games with the Unreal Engine! There are a lot of resources and materiel scattered all over the web on mod and game development with Unreal Engine 3, but what I appreciate with this book is a) its all in one nutshell from what is the engine to the deeper things such as the actual mod and game development and b) this book is actually a textbook that was used in a game design course so it really is catered to help you learn. I would recommend if you are starting out this is the best book to start with and then continue to add additional resources and information. My mod project has come really far because of this book and I am really thankful I bought it!

It crosses all baking boundaries--a truly unique and inspiring, delightful and appealing, baking book

Heads up: The Chocolate Lime Mud Cake has only seven ingredients--including the pinch of salt....and the instructions are fairly simple: I am buying this baking book! And, there are so many more recipes like that. But the chocolate, and the lime, together; well, for me, it does not get any better. Then there are the Cherry Spelt (yeast) Loaves..... And rosemary in my pecan pie. And way, way more.

The short blurb in bold face on this product page is absolutely correct, and sums up the book so well: "...a focus on charming, flavorful, and practical dishes...the pleasure of casual baking."

This is truly a baking book worth working through--recipe by recipe. Even the Sweet Dough chapter of buns, doughnuts, coffee cakes and more--things I'm not usually interested in--is luring me, especially the Coconut Lime Loaf..... There is not a single one that I want to pass by. (Well, to be honest, I will pass on the fried doughnuts, the Danish rolls and the coffee cake.) And I'm afraid to make any of the crackers (but I will)....because I would want to keep them to myself and eat them all before company arrives. And this is all before the "Decadent Dessert" chapter with cheesecakes, meringues, custards and sponge puddings.

Something I want to mention right off the bat, because it is a real plus for some: This author is conscious of small and/or minimally equipped kitchens.

Plenty of instruction. An astonishing amount of tips and helpful hints! This author likes to teach, and her writing is personable and earnest. She also has a humorous approach to the inevitable baking persnicketies, like uneven cake layers, whipping cream "calamities" and inevitable calories. You get more than the recipe, and there is plenty of troubleshooting and lots of tips.

There is a superb assortment of recipes: Cakes divided into cupcakes, loaf, "everyday" and sponge. There are simple, but unique, offerings. Then there are few complex recipes to give you a challenge, like the Coffee Black Currant Opera Cake, a take on a French patisserie classic. There are everyday breads that can be shaped different ways, flatbreads, brioche and more. Beautiful cookies and crackers--sweet and savory are represented. There are pie doughs, and sweet and savory pies. (Her Chicken, Pale Ale and Chicory Pie is a real keeper.)

Unusual combinations that work: The Morning Muffins are really good: Grapefruit Zest in the batter and a section of grapefruit on top of each one. Rye flour in the Apple Upside-Down Cake. Caraway and poppy seeds in a carrot cake. A seeded (one medium) loaf bread with one cup of seeds! There is even a soda bread with whole wheat flour, brown sugar and buttermilk. I make stolen for everyone (even the rotten neighbors) at Christmas, and this Cherry Stollen with Pistachio Marzipan is one I can't wait to try. Orange Lemon Coconut Cookies and the Tahini Lemon Cookies will be on my Holiday cookie platter.

Recipes come with imperial and metric measurements. Definitely take a trip through the "Look Inside" feature of this book. The publishers, Ten Speed Press, really do a fine job of giving the potential buyer an true indication of what the book is like. In the "Look Inside", you will be able to check out the recipe page layout, type style and size, the author's writing style (and some of her great tips), and the quality of photos.

Substitutions are provided when appropriate: The Gooseberry Elderflower Cake looked heavenly, but I knew I'd never find gooseberries....Then I turned the page and found viable substitutions.

Lovely photography, not a "finished dish" photo for every recipe, but almost--more than half.

I have so many cookbooks in my collection--and a whole two shelves of baking books--that I very seldom buy new cookbooks, but I will be indulging myself with this one!

It would make a wonderful gift: For a new baker, an old baker, yourself. It really does cross all baking boundaries! I highly recommend it! You cannot go wrong with this one.

Really well done

This is a well done book. I was really in to the show, but was hesitant to buy a book written by a contestant-I mean, they were just contestants, right? But Ruby had done most of her work with minimal fuss and gadgets, a lot by hand, so I bought hers when I found a good price. It has ended up being what I was looking for in a basic baking book. As an American, I had a lot of questions about terminology and technique, that I just needed a quick explanation. I had not found my answers in Paul and Mary's books (good books but not answering my novice State side questions-mostly recipes). I did not want a formal French pastry instructional book-just something fun. Flavors are good and the pictures are beautiful. Most of the book does not require a lot if baking tools that you haven't decided to buy yet. These recipes also work well and seem properly vetted. It would make a great gift.

Heraclitus tells us that the Universe is in permanent, constant transformation, that this perennial movement is embedded in the One, the summing up of all things which constitutes only one concept (Logos). The opposite of Parmenides, who emphasized Unity over Diversity and transformation, Heraclitus is proof that, by his time (6th century BC), educated Greeks took mythology basically as literature and folklore, but not as serious reilgion: their minds had expanded well beyond the fantastic adventures of the many antropomorphic Gods, to devise and understand that the Divinity has to be the final Unity, whatever its form. Heraclitus is, surprisingly, extremely "modern" in his approach to Nature and Divinity. The fragments reveal a powerful intellect, a real and relevant precursor of Western culture and civilization. Recommendable both to professional philosophers (whatever that means) and to the public interested in reflecting about the Universe and what it is.

Poets Make the Best Translators

I know enough Greek to question the faithfulness of most of these poetic transliterations of the original. But that is beside the point. If you want a literal translation pick up a Harvard LCL edition and scan the dry as dust academic parallel rendering. I sometimes wonder if poets don't make the best translators. Here is a text vivid and gripping and sounding in modern ears with a booming resonance.
Additional thoughts:
1. This a beautifully produced edition with the Greek on the left and Haxton's fine poetry on the right. As usual, I skipped the foreward and notes preferring to commune directly with the Master rather than through the medium of a posturing chorus of academic factotums.
2. The information age was supposed to witness the twilight of the great age of printing. How wrong. It is a miracle that in this age Viking is publishing a side by side Greek and English version of a book two and half millennia old! Perhaps the great age of the Printed Book is only now dawning.

Scholastically Incorrect But Philosophically Satisfying

Hillman's Fragments is not the most scholarly study of Heraclitus. Here Charles Kahn's dry as dust, ponderous tome, The Art and Thought of Heraclitus is better. It's also incredibly dull and a chore to read. If you are more interested in memorable meaning than scholarly explanation buy this edition but remember what you are getting. I own both and the Kahn source is a great depth book. Buy both and double the value of your experience of Heraclitus.
