Interesting autobiography

Austin Healey is an interesting man, with a dry, caustic sense of humor that he currently uses to mostly good effect as a television commentator on Rugby Union in England. His book is interesting and well written, and if you like him, you'll like it. If you don't like him, and cocky isn't a personality that appeals, that probably isn't the bio for you. It gives Healey's perspective on some turbulent times in English and British rugby, especially the Lions Tour coached by the now World Cup Winning Sir Graham Henry, back in the days when he might not have been setting the world on fire, so much.

It's an honest book, dealing with topics like injury and depression, including the anxiety and depression suffered by fathers after the birth of their children. It made me like Healey more than I did, and it is, at the end of it all, a good 'no kidding, I was there, this is how it happened'. It might be worth a read for those wondering why Martin Johnson didn't fare better as coach of England, too. Very recommended for Leicester Tiger fans.

Challenging book

This is a challenging, graduate level book, to be sure. I chose it to study the material independently on recommendation from a colleague who used it as a graduate student at RPI. One of the reasons I settled on it, apart from the recommendation, is that it is less expensive than other texts on this subject at this level. I cannot find a proper solution manual, nor are there any solutions in the back of the book, so independent study has been slow.

I believe this book would be a better resource with the aid of a well-versed professor or TA, but it is a bit dry for self-study.

This is a great book though it is not elementary reading.
I paid the hardcover edition 26.99$ while the paperback edition is now 87.20$ (9/13/13).

Loved it

I received this book in exchange for a honest review. Wow this new author really captivated my mind with this story. It had me sad and angry at the things the main character had to go through. I hated that his murder got killed before she could come reclaim him from the state and be a mother to him again. I enjoyed the story and can't wait to see what else he has in store for his readers.

The narrative runs in overdrive from start to finish, as Alten munches on the reality show phenomenon, ocean ecology and family issues (tensions among Jonas, his kids and his wife), but all those are merely the fibers connecting the novel's powerful muscle: the shark attack scenes, which are numerous and exciting and, toward the end, intercut as frantically as an MTV video. This title probably won't sell as well as Alten's first two Meg novels, but the novelty of an aging action hero adds general interest, and the author's many devoted fans should devour it.

This latest novel in Alten's MEG adventure-thriller series concerns a 57-foot, 64,000-pound prehistoric shark loose in the South Pacific. Alten begins with an informative description of the Pacific Ocean and its inhabitants, the Monterey Bay off California, and the islands of New Guinea and its surrounding waters. He also offers a brief history of the Ice Age, setting the tone for the fictional narrative that follows. Now enter Jonas Taylor, who joins the crew in filming a TV survival series called Daredevils aboard a replica of a Spanish galleon. Taylor eventually comes face to face with this monster--which, of course, comes as no surprise to readers. Who wins this violent struggle probably won't come as a surprise either, but Alten's imaginative tale will keep readers turning the pages to make certain their guess, intuition, or "readerly" instinct is correct. fresh exciting prehistoric Jaws vs. humans thriller

Now in his sixties, married to Terry and living in Tampa with her and their two teens, Jonas Taylor feels old and tired as financial sharks surround him demanding payments of past due bills. Jonas nostalgically thinks back to his glory days when he was in his mid forties and captured Angel the prehistoric Megalodon shark that terrorized the Mariana Trench. However, that was the highlight film of his life; now he owes a ton of money and has to deal with a recalcitrant female teen.
When the top-rated reality TV show Daredevils offers Jonas a chance to provide expert commentary on a contest in the South Pacific, he leaps at the opportunity. Taking his daughter with him, Jonas joins the TV show.
Meanwhile Terry investigates whale beachings off Vancouver Island. Neither of the spouses is aware that they have entered the latest feeding zone of "Megs" and will soon be battling for their lives as they did before (see MEG and THE TRENCH).
The third exciting Prehistoric Jaws vs. humans thriller is fast-paced especially Megs who steal the show once again. Steve Alten refreshes his series through Jonas is aging not so gracefully as he wonders how two decades have almost past since he had his fifteen minutes of fame and now has a chance to recapture somewhat his glorious past. Much of the action is similar to the previous novels with the shark feeding, man vs. man disputing, and shark vs. hero/heroine scenes, but the aging cast makes it seem new leading to a swimmingly fine time for the Megsters.

Adequate but outdated review of medical imagining

The second page of my copy of this book states:

Reprinted 1995, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003

This is pretty much the same text published in 1988 (after corrections)

So:

Fuzzy 80's CT scan illustrations

Nothing on fat suppression, or more modern image acquisition sequences in the "Nuclear Magnetic Imaging" chapter

Definitely no mention of harmonic ultrasound

Many anachronistic references to 'future technological improvements'

I am not sure whether the publisher's reluctance to update this book represents apathy or avarice, but the failure to more frequently revise a textbook in such a rapidly changing area relegates this book from serious consideration as a primary textbook.

Some chapters are quite clear and complete (for example X-ray) but overall the writng style is a little obtuse.

In summary- some good chapters but outdated, stylistically hum-drum and superceded by the numerous other texts in this area.

What I Liked:

I know I gave this book and Defy the same rating, but this one is definitely better than the first book (and I mean that nicely, not snidely). I liked Defy a lot, but I wanted more from the story, and less from the romance. One reason why I loved Ignite as much as I do is because the romance is much more clear-cut (thank God).

In Ignite, a new threat has arrived. Blevon seems to be threatening Antion, burning villages and sending parties to attack the king. Meanwhile, a beautiful noblewoman named Vera has been given refuge at Antion, someone much more suited for King Damian. But Alexa knows that Vera has a secret motive to seduce the king, just like she knows that Blevon can't be behind the attacks - someone much more powerful must be manipulating the country. But how many players are in the game, and how many threats can Alexa uncover?

Larson up the ante in this book, putting Antion and Blevon at odds. Everyone in Antion wants to go to war with Blevon, but Damian (and Alexa) don't believe that Blevon is at fault - perhaps a black sorcerer is. All the while, Damian is falling into the web of Vera, who seems to have power of her own - or is Damian just that captivated by her? Not to mention that one of the royals is held for ransom, and by a very powerful enemy... who wants Alexa in exchange for the royal.

Phew! Lots of crazy going on. Plenty of deceit, ransom, murder, angst, heartbreak, and action. I read this book in two sittings (only getting up for lunch and things), and it went by really quickly. The plot is very fast-paced and interesting.

The romance - let me talk about that for a bit. It might seem like the romance is all sorts of twisted, right? Damian, Alexa, and Rylan were locked in some sort of weird love triangle in Defy, but no longer. Personally, I didn't think it was much of a love triangle at all - to me, Damian always seemed to have Alexa's heart.

But then there's the matter of Vera seducing Damian in this book - pshh. We can deduce that this is a plot twist of a sort, with no real feelings involved. I'm all for Alexa and Damian in this book (and series), though I don't mind Rylan as much as I did in Defy (hate Vera though). The romance between Damian and Alexa is very angry and passionate and raw and sweet all at once - love!

I like Alexa more in this book. She continues to show her toughness, her strength, her grit, but she also breaks down a little and shows a softer side. To Damian, whom she really loves, but she pushes him away, thinking of what's best for the kingdom. To Jax (Damian's little brother), who wants to learn to be as brave as she. To her friends, and even those who aren't her friends. I like that Larson really spearheaded the issue of Alexa being a female in the King's guard - the author brings this up a lot, which makes the issue more authentic and plausible.

I really like Damian, though sometimes I find it hard to believe that he is the King. He seems and acts too young sometimes - not in an immature way, but in a, well, young way. However, I so want my own Damian. Is that too much to ask for?

The book ends on an okay note, though there is definitely room for another novel. It's not a cliffhanger, not quite, but there NEEDS to be more to the story, to resolve the conflict at the end that wan't quite wrapped up. The book has a bit of a bittersweetness [is that a word? Should be] to it, but not to the point where you like OMG THIS SUCKS. Just... book three. There needs to be a book three.

What I Did Not Like:

I can't think of anything specific that I didn't like - I wish the author could have included just a little more background of the events that happened in book one? Only because I really could not remember many things. For example, Alexa's parents, their death... this comes up again, in Ignite, and I wish I had remembered more from Defy. Of course, this could just be me!

Would I Recommend It:

If you read book one, you MUST read book two. It gets better in book two - take that as you may. If the romance bothered you in book one, relax, it clears up in book two (in a really obvious way). If the fantasy bothered you, then keep reading because things get rocky between countries. Basically, it wouldn't be a bad idea to keep reading this series, whether you liked book one or not!

4 stars. I really hope there is a book three, because this series just CAN'T END YET. I mean, it could, but I feel like there is a much more fulfilling ending to come... so, everyone, cross your fingers for a book three announcement!

The expectations of the first book were not upheld.

Not as stong as the first book. The strength of the character is lost on romantic feelings. The plot is blaringly obvious to everyone but the characters. Many of the scenes are repeated conversatons from the previous book and within this one. Overall a let down.

More in the world of Antion

So I completely love this series, and book two did not disappoint in plot, characters, and further world-building. I'm a sucker for strong female characters, capable but frustrating male characters, love triangles--to a point. Things do progress in regards to the Alexa/Damien/Rylan situation but I'm not giving anything away.

Ok, I did have one issue with the plot and character development. My only hang up is that Alexa didn't quite seem like her incredibly fully capable self. At one point she is in a tree, with the enemy in her sites, and has her bow and arrows with her--so why doesn't she attempt take the shot? I think I missed something there.

I'm intrigued to see what happens in book 3 :) Thanks for creating an incredible world to live in Sara B. Larson.
