A great beginner primer
By Robert A.
This is a fantastic book that serves as a well rounded introduction to image manipulation. It is part textbook and part workbook, as it features certain exercises throughout the length of the book. I bought this in conjunction with, " How to Create a Portfolio and Get Hired," by the same publisher. It has definitely helped me become a more independent visual album concept designer and just a generally more informed person regarding this field.

The Aeneid, by Vergil

This extraordinary new translation ofVergil'sAeneid stands alone among modern translations for its accuracy and poetic appeal. Sarah Ruden, a lyric poet in her own right, renders the classic poem in the same number of lines as the original work—a very rare feat that maintains technical fidelity to the original without diminishing its emotional power.

Ruden’s translation follows Vergil’s content faithfully, and the economy and fast pace she achievesare true to his own unflagging narrative force. With its central theme of national destiny versus. the destiny of individuals, the poem has great resonance in our own times, and Ruden adheres closely to the poet’s message. Her rendering of Vergil’s words gives immediacy to his struggling faith that history has beauty and purpose in spite of its pain. With this distinguished translation, modern readers can experience for themselves the timeless power of Vergil's masterpiece.

Review
“Robert Fagles, shortly before his death, set the bar very high for translating [Virgil’s] Aeneid.Yet already the scholar-poet Sarah Ruden has soared over the bar. . . The translation is alive in every part. . . . This is the first translation since Dryden’s that can be read as a great English poem in itself.”—Garry Wills, New York Review of Books

(Garry Wills New York Review of Books 2009-03-12)

"Ruden's translation separates itself from others by using the same number of verses as Vergil does. She has produced a fresh poetic translation forcontemporary English-speaking readers, one that speaks with its own voice."—David Quint, author of Cervantes's Novel of Modern Times: A NewReading of "Don Quijote"

(David Quint)

"Sarah Ruden'stranslation is distinguished by the quality of its verse, the unrelentingpropulsive force of its narrative drive, and the intelligence with which she hasshaped Vergil to fit her pentameter lines."—Charles Martin, translator,Metamorphoses: A New Translation

(Charles Martin)

"Grace and power reside in Sarah Ruden’s economical line-for-line translation of The Aeneid. Like Vergil’s Latin, her English may easily be lifted off the page and given voice."—Janet Lembke, translator of Virgil’s Georgics

(Janet Lembke)

“Toning down the magniloquence, Sarah Ruden gives us an Aeneid more intimate in tone and soberer in measure than we are used to—a gift for which many will be grateful.”—J.M. Coetzee
(J.M. Coetzee)

"By conveying the emotional force of the Latin, Ruden makes the Aeneid newly vivid, exciting, and relevant. This translation proves why, for centuries, Virgil's remarkable epic has been required reading."—Mary Lefkowitz, author of Greek Gods, Human Lives: What We Can Learn From Myths
(Mary Lefkowitz)

"Fast, clean, and clear, sometimes terribly clever, and often strikingly beautiful. . . . For me, hers is the cleanest of modern verse translations."—Richard Garner, The New Criterion (Richard Garner The New Criterion 2008-05-01)

“. . . The translation is alive in every part. . . . [T]he first translation since Dryden’s that can be read as a great English poem in itself.”— Garry Wills, New York Review of Books (Garry Wills New York Review of Books)

“. . . Ruden . . . a poet of considerable skill, has chosen boldly. Her work is . . . [a] rarity. . . . I cannot stress strongly enough Ruden’s skill with near-Swinburnean sound effects . . .” — Len Krisak, Translation and Literature, Volume 18 (Len Krisak Translation and Literature)

"Beautifully done. . . . Ruden's version earns special praise for measuring up to the challenge set by Lattimore and Fagles and then going one better in her fidelity to the actual form of the poem, without sacrificing fidelity to the word to any greater extent than they. It deserves to be widely read and admired."—Joseph Farrell, Translation and Literature (Joseph Farrell Translation and Literature)

About the Author

Sarah Ruden’s previous translations include Aristophanes’ Lysistrata and Petronius' Satyricon. She is a visiting scholar at Yale Divinity School.

Sweeping, Poignant, Faithful. Forget Fagles.
By R. Gerard
I have been a student of the classics since I was young. Naturally, I had been exposed to the Aeneid early on in the fashion that most students are: with the revered Robert Fitzgerald translation. Through the years many translations, both good and bad, have been published: Humphries, Lombardo (probably one of the best), and Mandelbaum to name a few of the most popular.

My adoration of the Ruden translation started in the most modest way. I was browsing through volumes in a used book store and came across the Yale University Press publication of the Aeneid, a translation that I had not heard of, from a translator I knew nothing about. I hopped on the internet while in the store and did some research, and came up with almost unanimously positive reviews, so I purchased it after reading a few, impressive passages.

Currently, all the rage is over the Penguin translation by Robert Fagles. To my understanding, his is the translation most widely taught in schools next to Fitzgerald. I am a fan of Fagles. His storytelling is grand and vivid. However, anyone who is versed in Classical Latin and has read the Aeneid in its original language can tell you that Fagles takes far too many liberties, embellishing Vergil's epic very subjectively (and not sparingly). This is problem to those who want a faithful reading of Vergil. Fagle's is far from a faithful translation of Vergil's poetry. Latin is a very compact, concise, and flowing language, with many subtle nuances. It is not grandiose and cumbersome like Fagles.

But Sarah Ruden has done something uncanny here. It is a popular saying that "one cannot translate poetry," which is true. It is inevitable that when translating poetry, much of the vigor and hidden meanings are lost. But Ruden's is the closest to the original one can get in modern English idiom. She avoids the flowery embellishments that Fagles is guilty of, preserves the conciseness of Vergil's Latin, without sacrificing the elegance of her or Vergil's pens (Ruden is, after all, an accomplished poet from what I understand). And, even more laudable, is the fact the Ruden's is practically a line-by-line translation, using the exact same number of lines used by Vergil. She also has a talent for preserving Vergil's meter whenever possible. The Aeneid, to some theorists, was made to be orated and heard. And Ruden's is a translation that is a pleasure hear as well as read.

Having read and thoroughly enjoyed Ruden's Aeneid, I like to say that Ruden is to Fagles, as Chickering is to Heaney. Ruden's translation might not be as famous as Fagles', but it is more scholarly, more faithful, and elegant in a different, yet more authentic way (just as Chickering's Beowulf may never achieve the status of Heaney's, yet Chickering preserves the spirit of the original in a more convincing way.

Get Ruden's Aeneid! Whether you are a novice to Vergil's Aeneid, a casual reader (it is a relatively quick read), or a full-on Latinist/Classicist, you will not be dissatisfied with this text.

The Aeneid
By Billino
This is a great, fresh new translation of this favorite classic by Yale's Dr. Sarah Ruden. I first heard about it on PBS's Fresh Air, with Terry Gross. I am glad I was listening to the radio that afternoon on my one hour drive to work in Boston.

Best Aeneid translation since Alexander Pope's.

Vergil extraordinaire!
By Amazon Crazy
Since I first read Virgil some sixty years ago, a young Latin student in a New England prep school, I have returned again and again to renew the experience. Every time it has been meaningful. This time with this translation it makes even a more profound mark on me. The translation is brilliant, and Virgil scholars will long be indebted to Ms. Sarah Ruden for her insight and wisdom.

Does God Play Dice: The Mathematics of Chaos, by Ian Stewart

Einstein did not believe that "God plays dice". He laid the foundations for today's thinking that the universe is governed by the immutable laws of physics - there is no room for chance. But these foundations may be built on sand. The new science of chaos is forcing scientists to rethink even the most fundamental ideas about the way in which the universe behaves. Chaos theory has already shown that systems obeying precise laws can nevertheless act in a random manner. "Does God Play Dice?" explains the new theories of systems that obey simple laws but which are neither constant nor predictable. Ian Stewart reveals a strange universe. A universe in which nothing may be as it seems, where familiar geometrical shapes such as circles and ellipses give way to infinitely complex structures known as fractals. In terms that anyone can understand "Does God Play Dice?" tells the story of this new science and the implications chaos has for notions of predictability and the verification of scientific theories. Chaos is a whole new world of ideas and possibilities, a new kind of mathematics, a fundamental insight into nature itself, and it brings us closer to an understanding of literally everything.

Amazon.com Review
We'd better get used to chaos because it certainly isn't going anywhere. Mathematician Ian Stewart--who is also a very talented writer--shares his insights into the history and nature of the highly complex in Does God Play Dice: The New Mathematics of Chaos. While his delightful phrasings will draw in nearly every reader, those with a strong aversion to figures and formulae should understand that it will be slow going. Chaos math suffuses everything from dreaming to the motion of the planets, and Stewart's words can never match the precision of his numbers. Persistence pays off, though; there are so many "aha" moments of insight herein that it almost qualifies as a religious text. The second edition has been partially revised in the wake of 1990s research, and three exciting new chapters report on prediction and other applications of chaos mathematics. --Rob Lightner

Review
"A book well worth reading and a valuable contribution to the literature on chaos" (New Scientist)

"For those who have even rudimentary mathematical knowledge, for teachers and for lively-minded school and university students, Stewart give a valuable insight into the innards of chaos" (The Times Higher Education Supplement)

"A fine introduction to a complex subject" (Daily Telegraph)

From the Back Cover
"You believe in a God who plays dice, and I in complete law and order."
—Albert Einstein

The science of chaos is forcing scientists to rethink Einstein's fundamental assumptions regarding the way the universe behaves. Chaos theory has already shown that simple systems, obeying precise laws, can nevertheless act in a random manner. Perhaps God plays dice within a cosmic game of complete law and order.

Does God Play Dice? reveals a strange universe in which nothing may be as it seems. Familiar geometrical shapes such as circles and ellipses give way to infinitely complex structures known as fractals, the fluttering of a butterfly's wings can change the weather, and the gravitational attraction of a creature in a distant galaxy can change the fate of the solar system.

This revised and updated edition includes three chapters on the prediction and control of chaotic systems. New information regarding the solar system and an account of complexity theory is also incorporated. It is a lucid and witty book which makes the complex mathematics of chaos accessible and entertaining.

If you cannot read this book within three weeks, I don't want to recommend it. (added in Dec 27, 2015)
By I am falling in love with my life
Before reading this book, I've read the famous book, Chaos by J. Gleick. I really enjoyed the book. It gave me an intellectual shock. I can dare to say that my whole perspective on the world has changed. As a following-up book, I chose 'Does God Play Dice?' by I. Stewart. I think my choice was appropriate. It explains some important concepts, for example, Feigenbaum constant, in more detail while it also explains chaos from the basics as Gleick did. And it contains newer and more sophisticated results that are not included in Gleick's book. For example, this book deals with complexity theory in the final chapter. In that chapter, the part about 'ant country' was really fun!!! And the book contains a chapter on the problem of overcoming the probabilistic nature of quantum mechanics by applying the central characteristic of chaos, "deterministic but apparently random process" (It was also very fun, although I skipped many paragraphs). And this book features many helpful pictures and photos.

The author is a specialist in Chaos theory although Gleick is a journalist, so this book can be more trusted. And he has wide (and exact, as far as I see) understanding on science including mathematics (he is a mathematician), physics, physiology, astronomy. And he is excellent at defining words concisely and very understandably. For example,

(page 40) ... normal distribution. This is a bell-shaped curve that closely models the proportions of a population that have some particular characteristic.

(page 90) Two flow lines are called the separatrices of the saddle. They're so named because they separate the way nearby points flow.

(page 151) A bifurcation is any change in the qualitative form of the attractor of a dynamical system.

(page 172) ... time-series: a list of numbers representing the value of the observed quantity at regular intervals of time.

(page 184) Wilson's method was based upon the idea of self-similarity, the tendency of identical mathematical structure to recur on many levels.

And the explanation of Julia sets and renormalization is also excellent although I don't still understand the renormalization.

But the book has some disadvantages. I think if you are not so familiar with English but familiar only with academic science papers in English, you may have difficulty in reading the book. First of all, there are a lot of difficult words like muse, topsy-turvy, rejig, etc. I had to look up such words in a dictionary many times. Whenever I thought that I am spending too much time on the book, I skipped many passages. And more importantly, the author's writing style is somewhat rhetorical, contrary to directness. Reading the book, I thought that the book is like a detective novel. If you are a native English speaker, it would not be a problem, other than that, it would make the book more interesting. But if you are not, you may be confused. Another disadvantage of the book is the huge variation of the author's skill in explaining important theories and experiments. In some places, I felt that nothing can be better than this. Other places, I felt that I learned little things. For example, if somebody asked me to show chaos in front of him, I think I would have to tell the story about the logistic mapping (a mathematical function) with my pencils and papers. In fact, both of Gleick and Stewart do this. I can understand Gleick, but not Stewart. There are many places like that.

1. Stewart shows that the irregular dynamics of Hyperion, a moon of Saturn, can be explained by chaos theory and he assigned many pages about that. But I could only understand a little part of them.

2. The author deals with the Feigenbaum constant (a very important notion of chaos theory) more in detail than Gleick did. I couldn't understand well the Feigenbaum constant in Gleick's book, so when I come to the chapter on Feigenbaum constant, I desperately look forward to learning something. But after reading the chapter, I found that I still don't understand what Feigenbaum constant is and why the Feigenbaum constant is universal in a kind of functions. The exact same feelings are applied to the Smale's achievement.

As a whole, the book has valuable informations about chaos, but considering the above disadvantages, if you need more than three weeks to read the book, I don't recommend the book, because you may be able to get the informations from other books and sources more easily.

(added in Dec 27, 2015)

This is an addition of my previous review on 'Does God Play Dice?' by I. Stewart. I gave only three stars in the review. There, I said that regarding the two important concepts, the Feigenbaum constant and renormalization, his explanation was insufficient for non-specialists. These days, I am reading the chapters about chaos in Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos by S. Strogatz. I am obtaining clearer understandings about chaos, especially about the Feigenbaum constant and renormalization. After more carefully rereading the mentioned parts of Stewart's book, I found that my review was not fair to the author. Here, I want to summarize what I know now.

1. What is renormalization (or renormalization group)? Renormalization is a technique in quantum field theory that is used to cancel infinity in calculations of physical quantities. It has been used since the mid 20th century.

2. What is K. Wilson's work? K. Wilson solved a long standing problem by applying renormalization to phase transition (like an ice melting into water) (1970s). By this, he won the 1982 Nobel Prize in Physics. Wilson's method was based upon the idea of self-similarity, the tendency of identical mathematical structure to recur on many levels (p184).

3. What is Feigenbaum's work? Turbulence had been a big old problem in physics. Feigenbaum was interested in the problem. Phase transition and turbulence only differ in that turbulence is a transition in a flow-pattern rather than in the physical structure of a substance (p184). Some physicists believed that Wilson's renormalization method might apply to turbulence. Feigenbaum was one of such physicists. Turbulence is a nonlinear phenomenon. Nonlinear equations are mathematically extremely difficult, so he chose a simple nonlinear equation (maybe being able to reflect some essence of turbulence) and decided to study it. What he chose was the logistic mappings y = r x(1-x) where r is a parameter such that a real number from 0 to 4 (for each r, the equation is defined explicitly as you see). He obtained the number 4.669... for a sequence related to the family of them (i.e. the family of logistic maps for all r). I will explain about the sequence later.

What was amazing was that this number 4.669... pops up for the same kind of sequence related to the another family of maps like, y = r sin x (and many other family of maps), but there seemed to be no reason that the same number happens. For such coincidence, Feigenbaum could see self-similarity, and he wrote a paper in 1979 explaining the coincidence by using the idea of Wilson's renormalization. This coincidence is called the Feigenbaum's universality and the number 4.669... is called the Feigenbaum constant. Feigenbaum's claim was (mathematically) rigorously proved in later years.

4. What is the relation between chaos and Feigenbaum's work? For example, in the logistic mapping, depending on the value of r, the corresponding logistic mapping shows a chaotic behaviour or not. Say, start with r=1. The logistic map y= x(1-x) does not show a chaotic behaviour (we will call it regular behaviour). This regularity continues until r= 3.57.... After r=3.57..., the map shows a chaotic behaviour. When we increase r from 1 to 3.57..., for some values of r, like r=3, r=3.449, r= 3.54409..., the behaviour of the corresponding maps change qualitatively while retaining regularity. The number 4.669... is a number concerning the increases of the sequence of such r's. The famous mathematician S. Smale pointed out that to understand chaos, it would be helpful to understand the sequence of r because chaotic behaviour starts from 3.57... where the sequence converges.

5. What do I want to study in the future? As the first step, I want to study renormalization and next, I want to study Feigenbaum's work, that is, how he showed that the constant is universal using renormalization. The reason Feigenbaum succeeded was that he could see the scaling phenomenon in the mentioned sequence. Scaling phenomenon is very general and it is one of characteristics of chaos. As I quoted that, for scaling phenomenon, renormalization is ready for use. So, the second step is clear to me. I want to research my specialty, group theory, looking for some scaling phenomenon. If there is, I will check if I can apply renormalization. Renormalization is such a powerful method that it had Wilson win the Nobel Prize and Feigenbaum win the Wolf Prize.

Excellent Work on Chaos
By Randolph Eck
This is the second book I read from Ian Steward. I was looking for another book on the subject of chaos, and having been impressed by a book of his called "The Mathematics of Life," I decided to read this one. I wasn't disappointed.

He begins with the Greeks, Eudoxus, Ptolemy, and others and moves through time to Copernicus, Kepler, and Galilei showing how the foundations of mathematics were developed. Later we learn of the works of Euler, Lagrange and his generalized coordinates, Hamilton's work on the state of dynamical systems, and Galton's contributions to the normal distribution. As the 20th century came to a close, statistical methodology took its place alongside deterministic modeling as an equal partner.

By chapter six, we are into strange attractors and flows in a plane such as sinks, sources, saddles, and limit cycles. Then there is quasiperiodicity, suspensions, solenoids, and Poincar sections which can give us interesting pictures of the dynamical behavior. Any text on chaos is, of course, going to cover logistic mapping and bifurcation diagrams, as well - so does Steward. Chapter ten introduces Mitchell Feigenbaum and the Feigenvalue - a value of 4.669 - the rate at which successive period doublings accumulate faster and faster. Chapter eleven gets into fractals, Julia sets and the infamous Mandelbrot set.

I found chapter sixteen very interesting. I'll just quote Steward here, "The central thrust of the chapter is the possibility of changing the theoretical framework of quantum mechanics altogether, replacing quantum uncertainty by deterministic chaos as Einstein would have liked." As Steward delves into concepts such as quanta; wave functions; spin; eigenfunctions; decoherence; the Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen paradox and other concepts, he exposes what he feels are some loopholes in the arguments - all very fascinating. His alternate explanation of "spooky action at a distance" or quantum entanglement eliminates the need for information to travel at speeds exceeding the speed of light. I found his argument convincing - too lengthy to describe here. In the last chapter, the discussion turns to complexity theory and how it relates to chaos.

Steward presents here for us, I feel, an interesting introduction to the world of chaos - the world we live in incidentally. This is an in depth discussion of the subject, but I feel that Steward did a remarkable job of "translating" the obtuse mathematics and concepts to an understandable level for someone not expert in the field. Certainly an excellent book, and I highly recommend it.

By the way, as Steward says in the Epilogue, "If God played dice ... he'd win."

Very good book with a few minor flaws
By D. Eigenvector
An interesting and fun introduction to chaos. Stewart writes very well and often makes keen and insightful observations. I learned a great deal and was inspired to read other books on this fascinating topic. There were a few things I didn't like, but to be honest they are not major: 1) The deliberate avoidance of mathematical detail in this book, which does indeed present some very deep mathematical concepts, is very odd and sometimes unhelpful. Odd, for example, as when in the midst of a chapter on quantum theory Stewart takes time to painstakingly tell the reader what an absolute value is. Or, when he's describing how to perform calculations to generate chaos he stops for a paragraph to explain what it means to square a variable. Is it really possible that readers who lack such rudimentary math skills would be reading this book?? 2) For my tastes, there's way too much God talk in this book. Stewart clearly is not doing this for any religious reason - but it's odd because I have no idea why he finds it necessary to so often toss in sentences about God doing this or God thinking that, or God blah blah blah. By the end - especially at the literal end and the stupid joke in the epilogue - it really gets tiresome.

Prussian Apocalypse: The Fall of Danzig 1945, by Egbert Kieser

Egbert Kieser’s graphic account of the Red Army’s assault on East Prussia in 1945 is one of the classic histories of the destruction of Hitler’s Germany, and it has never before been available in English. Using extensive, firsthand, unforgettable eyewitness testimony, he documents in riveting detail the catastrophe that overtook German civilians and soldiers as they fled from the Soviet onslaught and their world collapsed around them.

Tony Le Tissier, in this fluent and vivid translation of the original German text, brings to bear all his expert knowledge of the military defeat of the German armies in the East and the enormity of the human disaster that went with it. Egbert Kieser was born in 1928 in Bad Salzungen, Thringen and studied philosophy and the history of art at Heidelberg University. He worked as a freelance journalist, writer and editor. Among his many publications are two outstanding studies of German Second World War history – Danziger Bucht 1945 (which is translated here as Prussian Apocalypse) and Operation Sea Lion: The German Plan to Invade Britain, 1940.

Details of WW2 you don't get elsewhere
By Sieg Sanders
I bought this book because my grandmother and her three children fled Danzig on Mar 24, 1945. I wanted to get a third party view of the events that occurred at that time and the title drew me in. Reading this I learned exactly how much was endured by the inhabitants of Prussia. They had to flee their homes in the dead of winter with what food and clothing they could carry, while the Soviets were racing to block westward movement by both civilians and soldiers. These refugees had to endure the revenge of the Soviets, stupidity of the Nazis, and the cruelty of the weather. Thousands died, no on was left unaffected. This book is packed with third person stories of individual acts of bravery, desperation, survival, loss, and faith. Even more heartbreaking is the fact that these people did not know they would not be allowed to return, as this land would be transferred from Germany to Poland after the war. This compelling read is for any historian or student of human relations.

I did find this a little difficult to read though since it is written in British English. For those who can read in German, this book is a translation of "Danziger Bucht 1945: Dokumentation einer Katastrophe".

Additionally if you find this time period compelling you might also try "Germany 1945 by Richard Bessel"

GOOD, BUT COULD BE BETTER
By John M. Lane
This is a review of PRUSSIAN APOCALYPSE: THE FALL OF DANZIG 1945 by Egbert Kieser published in 2011 by Pen & Sword Books, Ltd., of Barnsley, South Yorkshire in Great Britain. This book first appeared in German in 1978 as DANZIGER BUCHT 1945: DOKUMENTATION EINER KATASTROPHE (THE DANZIG BOOK 1945: DOCUMENTATION OF A CATASTROPHE.) The original title is actually a better indication of the book's focus. While there is quite a bit of information about East Prussia, the book really concentrates on the fall of Danzig in 1945.

Egbert Kieser is a well-known German writer who studies philosophy and history at Heidelberg University. He is best known among English readers for OPERATION SEA LION: THE GERMAN PLAN TO INVADE BRITAIN, 1940.

PRUSSIAN APOCALYPSE was translated from German into English by Tony Le Tissier, an Englishman with numerous publications including THE BATTLE OF BERLIN 1945 to his credit. His translation demands a lot from the reader. Being of Prussian descent myself, I knew what "panje horses" and "panje wagons" were, but most readers won't. "Panje" is old Prussian slang for "Polish" or "Russian" and it has a negative connotation. A "panje horse" is a shaggy, untended mustang used by poor people who couldn't afford good horses like the Trakehners bred for the Kaiser around Insterburg. "Panje wagons" were likewise small, cobbled-together farm wagons used by people who couldn't afford anything better. This is the kind of term that needs to be clarified in a glossary, which this book lacks, or explained in a footnote, which this book also lacks. It also lacks an index.

Esoteric terms like this are sprinkled all through PRUSSIAN ACOPALYPSE. There are numerous references to refugees directed to a "chausee" and obstructed by a "Golden Pheasant" until they find themselves back in a "cauldron." "Chausee" is French for causeway, or roadway. In East Prussia, these were often elevated to because of low-lying wet ground. "Golden Pheasants" was a derogatory term for a Nazi Party official in his brown uniform with gold braid. "Cauldrons" were what soldiers today might call "kill boxes." They were areas into which heavy fire was directed.

There were also some editing errors. A prominent East Prussian family is described as "Sternberg" on p. 14 and "Steinberg" on p. 15.

For students of the Eastern Front, this book will be useful. It will be difficult for non-specialists, especially in the USA. It does have a lot of information and some useful maps. It has no photographs or other illustrations, however, and it desperately needs good annotations (or a good glossary, or both) a real bibliography and an index.

The author mentions Soviet atrocities against Prussian civilians (especially women and girls), in passing, but seems a bit too prim to get into the sordid details of it. Nemmersdorf, for example, is barely mentioned. Nobody can accuse Herr Kieser of exploiting what has been called "the pornography of violence", but his approach masks the terror that pervaded almost every aspect of the flight west from the Red Army.

I hope the publishers bring out a new edition of this book with the changes I've mentioned. If they do, I'd be happy to give it five stars. Until then, it's a three star book. It's good, but it could be a lot better.

One of the last battles in East Europe in WWII.
By Kevin M Quigg
There are few books about the battle for East Prussia. It was brutal and involved the deaths of thousands of German civilians.
This book sheds valuabe light on these unknown battles such as Danzig, Konigsberg, and Pillau. Russian aircraft targeted fleeing civilians and strafed them. Russian submarines targeted Red Cross ships loaded with fleeing German civilians and sank them. Russian troops raped and shot through East Prussia. No wonder German citizens didn't want to be captured by the Red Army. This shows the lost battles of East Prussia and why the Germans were so unprepared for the final battles. German civilians fled in the winter to port cities for a chance at evacuation. Many died from the elements of winter.

The author shows how the Golden Pheasants (Nazi Party high officials) often did not want to evacuate, and risked the lives of their charges. These same Golden Pheasants also were the ones who survived the loss of territory, since they had enough food and clothing. These golden pheasants fought to the last citizen, and then escaped west.

This is a good read about a lost battle. The translation was OK from German. The author introduces so many characters, that it is hard to follow all these individual stories about the war. I thought this a good read even with all the characters that inhabit each chapter.

Moral notions are foundational questions that have commanded deep reflection since antiquity, reflection that psychological science cannot evade, because the moral formation of children is a central concern of parents, schools, and communities charged with educating the next generation. In this respect there are few domains of study more crucial than moral psychology and few topics of greater importance than the development of moral self-identity, of moral character, and of the moral personality. This edited volume features the expertise of preeminent scholars in moral personality, self, and identity, such as moral philosophers, personality theorists, developmental psychologists, moral personality researchers, social psychologists, and neuroscientists. It brings together cutting-edge work in moral psychology that illustrates an impressive diversity of theoretical perspectives and methodologies and simultaneously points the way toward promising integrative possibilities.

Review
"The editors of this book provide a valuable service by pulling together the research on dispositional/personality factors related to morality. The diverse chapters, written by a group of outstanding researchers and theorists, include an overview on what is known about this important topic, delineate various frameworks for conceptualizing the relevant issues, and raise important questions for future work. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in morality and moral development and may convince more personality researchers to study morality."
- Nancy Eisenberg, Arizona State University

"Moral personality has been largely a moribund topic since the classic 1930s research of Hartshorne and May, and the critique of trait theories provided in the 1960s by Walter Mischel. In this volume, Narvaez and Lapsley, two developmental psychologists, have brought together a rich and current collection of well-written chapters in an effort to reconnect morality with theories of personality, narrative psychology, and social psychology. This book is an excellent read and belongs on the shelf of anyone with a serious interest in moral psychology."
- Larry Nucci, University of California, Berkeley

"The essays in Personality, Identity, and Character: Explorations in Moral Psychology originated in 2006 and 2008 invited symposia on moral personality at Notre Dame, as part of a continuing effort to find the way forward for the science of moral development in the wake of the Kohlberg paradigm. The contribution by Augusto Blasi at the end of this volume is worth the price of the book-and a must read for anyone working in moral psychology..."
- Don Collins Reed, PsycCRITIQUES

"....a rich resource on a huge range of topics in moral psychology...."
- Bruce Maxwell, Universit du Qubec ... Trois-Rivires, Journal of Moral Education

Personality, Identity, and Character
By Sally K. Severino
This is an invaluable collection of papers on morality written by highly respected academicians. Since I am interested in neuroscience and morality, I found chapters 3, 4, 5, and 6 particularly interesting.
Chapter 3 by Owen Flanagan offers a careful definition of moral values.
Chapter 4 by David Wong provides a provocative conversational conceptualization of culture.
Chapter 5 by Jorge Moll and colleagues presents a fine discussion of neuroscience and morality.
Chapter 6 by Darcia Narvaez clearly describes the triune ethics theory.
This book is a must for those interested in human morality.

Bloom was abandoned by her mother at birth, but thanks to her dad she never once felt unloved. When he is killed in a car wreck, leaving her without any close family, she spends a year mourning him. She feels as if her heart has been cut out of her chest and nothing is left but an empty hole that she doesn’t think will ever heal. Then one night after work she finds a wounded dog in the woods behind her house and takes him in, not realizing he’s more than just some stray dog but a wolf shifter, who happens to be her mate. Pike is getting over the loss of his father by running full force away from his responsibilities. He’s getting ready to go back to face his new position as the Alpha of his pack when he catches the scent that can only belong to his mate. When Bloom finds out she may not be the normal human she always thought herself to be, she’s forced to search out the woman who abandoned her at birth. **Warning This Book Contains Graphic Language***

Great book!
By R. Rivera
I was given this in exchange for a honest review.

I enjoyed this book through out. There were some surprise and some action. It's been awhile since I've read a shifter book, so I latched on to this pretty easily. The characters were great, except for the main guy saying "Darlin'" every other sentence and Bloom's reaction to everything was very realistic. She reacted in a way a normal person would and that was great! Overall, I recommend this book.

I just became Michelle Turner's biggest fan! I couldn't put this book down. From start to finish. I was giggling like a little school girl at many parts in this book, why because I love Bloom and the way she comes across! I normally don't do spoilers, but I will say, to have your life change as much as hers did in a week period and go through everything she did I'm so glad she found her mate! I can't wait for the release of the next book in in this series. I will be purchasing the paperback copy when it's released. Thanks Michelle Turner for a wonderful book!

Blooming decent read
By RedReader
This one surprised me. There were elements not expected, but appreciated. I loved the evolution of the tale as well as Bloom's fairly realistic actions in not believing/acting on that 'instant mate' thing. Would love to see more from this author and was left hanging a little, so a sequel would be awesome....just sayin
