Sobering Gut Check

Is yours one of them?

Autopsy of a dead church is a sobering gut check of congregational health. In this book Rainer shares his observations from the "autopsies" of fourteen deceased churches. From his investigation, Rainer identifies ten warning signs of a dying church. For me it was a sobering read. That one's true of us. So's that one. That one's not! But that one is, and that one, and that one. . . .

This book isn't a solutions guide. It's a wake-up call. The last three chapters of the book offer a few brief suggestions to churches who are showing signs of sickness, very sick, or dying. However, each chapter also includes a call to prayerful commitment. It's a reminder that changing the church has to begin with changing us.

A couple notes: this is a small, short book. I was surprised when I opened the box to find such a small book. At just over 100 pages and only 7 1/2 inches high, this is sized more like a gift book than a normal trade hardback. That doesn't mean the content should be dismissed. While I would have liked to see these ideas developed more fully, the short length may be of benefit to congregations who want to use this as a book to read and discuss in a large group. Also, this the book you want if you need to know if you have a problem. If you're looking for solutions, you probably need to do some other reading. Ed Stetzers' Comeback Churches: How 300 Churches Turned Around and Yours Can, Too or Rainer's ownBreakout Churches: Discover How to Make the Leap would be good starting points.

Overall, this is a well-done treatment of a serious topic. And, if Rainer's estimate that 90% of churches are either showing symptoms of sickness, very sick, or dying is correct, it's a book that every pastor--and church member--needs to read.

Must Have for Church Leaders and Pastors

This book is incredible. It's not the first book by Thom Rainer that I've read, but I would say it is one of his best. This book is simple, yet it's filled with practical information that can save your church and help you reach your potential. At first glance, the title may seem depressing. Rainer looks at 14 churches and dissects the finals years to determine why they died. Part 1 or Chapters 1-11 cover the common themes in these 14 churches. He goes further, though, as the subtitle indicates "12 Ways to Keep Yours (Church) Alive." Part 2 or Chapters 12-14 tells you what to do depending on what stage of sickness your church is currently.

One thing I love about this book is that Rainer gives a Prayerful Commitment at the end of each chapter that you and your leadership can pray together. There are also Questions for further thought at the end of each chapter to aid in a group discussion.

I would recommend this book to every church leader no matter what the status of your church. This book is excellent to be read with leadership and is vital to all who want to impact the world by bringing new people into relationships with Christ.

Autopsy Inconclusive

I guess that this book should be easy for me to review. I am a fan, so to speak, of Mr. Rainer. After having read and reviewed many books, there are only two that I have read for review purposes that I use regularly in pastoral ministry, one of which is his earlier work, I Am a Church Member. I highly recommend that for pastors and leaders who are looking at adding new members to their church. Let me start by describing the book. Like some volumes that came out about ten years ago, Autopsy of a Deceased Church is a little book with a potentially big impact. It is an inexpensive hardback consisting of 102 pages. The book is an easy read. It is also very practical.

I guess my quandary is its audience. Those who need it most probably wouldn't pick it up. They are the church killers. Their work is amply shown in the pages of this volume. They are territorial, carnal, "it's my church" kind of people. What is sad is that, in my experience at least, these people who are such a burden to churches and pastors are also such a blessing. This Jekyll and Hyde kind of member really impacts those pastors and churches to a large degree.

As a pastor, I think its greatest impact on me is making sure that I am not like the tenured pastor described within. As a minister who has thus far invested almost 18 years in one body of believers, I have to be diligent to make sure that my tendencies to be a stabilizer don't translate into being a peace at any price kind of minister. One of my greatest takeaways is to ensure that my ministry to those outside of the body of believers is a priority personally and to keep making it a priority in our church.

Another thing that was difficult for me to assess is where our church fits. I wonder how many people does it take and how much power must they wield to make what describes them descriptive of the body as a whole? Personally, I believe only one negative assessment, maybe two, could be worrisome for our overall church's health and vitality.

All of that being said, for a variety of reasons, this is a book worth reading. If you are concerned about your church's health, you may wish to analyze it from the perspective of what killed so many other churches. As a minister of the Gospel, this book may wake you up to ways you may be contributing to the death of your church or how to assist in its turning around. Do you think the good days of your church have long since passed? Then this work may point you to a remedy for what ails your body of believers.

I would give this book three out of five stars. I wouldn't describe it as okay, it is better than okay. A revision considering some feedback like my own would be very welcome in a few years. Overall, a good book on a very important topic.

About the Author
Raised as an Air Force Brat, I began daydreaming at an early age. I've been writing for my own fun since 5th grade but didn't get really serious about it until 2008. At that time I became sick and needed something to do while I recovered. My daughter said I should write down some of my wild stories. I wanted to leave my grandkids with something special, something of me. I had an idea that had buzzed in my head for a number of years and thought now was a good time to let it out. My hopes were for at least 100 pages. That same story is now 9 books of approx. 120,000 words each. I've racked up over 2 million words in this series alone. It is called The Year of The Change (YA, Sweet Romantic, Fantasy) The first book is in edit at this time. I took a short story, that I was fond of, to try out the deep waters of Amazon. It's called Two Days of a Dream (Sweet Romantic, Fantasy)I launched it in May of 2012 and as of this writing over 33,000 people have it on their Kindle or Cloud. I am Amazed how well its done and how kind everyone has been to me. I have the best readers around. Thank You!

Sweet easy read.

I want to start out by saying that all of the books I read start with 5 stars. I have a great respect for anyone who has written and published anything. It is no easy task.

So that being said let's begin with a review.

First of all, I LOVED the concept. It was a romance but I have yet to come across the idea this story is based around (Don't want to give away any spoilers ;). The charactes were very well written and I felt for both of them. I will admit that a few times I had to roll my eyes or give the female lead a "side eye" >;/ But for the most part I really did like them both. I felt the author did a wonderful job giving background and depth to them that was not excessive, added much to the story, and explained why they made choices they did.

The descriptions of the diffrent areas was also very well done and painted a wonderful picture.

Now all that being said I do have some constructive critisim. Starting with The military jargon.

I am the daughter of a Marine. And I found myself distracted more than once by certain inaccuracies. They are not soldiers, they do not wear fatigues, they would NEVER no matter HOW much they loved and respected him refer to their Captain as Cap. They just wouldn't.

I also had a really hard time with the way Kelly viewed almost every single man she interaccted with. It seemed like all of them were just walking around the base camp ogling her and making her feel uneasy. Were they all just supposed to be skeevy purvy marines? Maybe this was intentional and the author was trying to show Kelly's distrust of all males? Not sure but it didn't really work for me.

I was also kinda disappointed in the rather quick and rushed ending. I do feel there should have been at least an epilogue if not another chapter.

Those three items are the only reason why I gave this 3 stars instead of 4 or 5.

All in all this was a fun read and I will definantly keep an eye out for more from this writer. :)

Needs more research

While this was a nice sweet romance, it was very hard to get over the multitude of mistakes. If the author had made the characters ARMY instead of Marines, there would be no problem. With very little internet research, it is possible to find correct military jargon and for anyone who is knowledgeable whatsoever about the Marines this book is more aggravating in its mistakes than it was worth. Marines are NOT soldiers. They do not wear fatigues, they wear cammies. They do NOT say hoo-rah...they say oo-rah (yes, there is a difference). They do not call captains "cap". I could go on and on. I never write reviews and am generally fairly easy to please, especially with free books, but this had too many mistakes to overlook. It is definitely important to do your research if you are going to be writing about something that is widely known in the military community and is fairly simple to check.

I liked it!

I really enjoyed reading the book. It has an interesting concept, that a magic gown could take us to our perfect man, and I loved that. The story was well written, has some wonderful characters and I can't wait to read more about the gown. It disappeared right after Kelly went home. Will it be found? Will it match more couples?

It's pretty bad when the abusive boyfriend is the most likable character in the story

It's pretty bad when the abusive boyfriend is the most likable character in the story, but the wretched girlfriend one ups him repeatedly. I don't think I've ever hated a female character more then the main character in this story, Tess. The book basically consists of her screaming at her boyfriend, Hardin, after promising to give him one more chance. Repeatedly. They have graphic make up sex, and within a page she finds a new reason to scream at him and cry. Rinse, repeat. How many fights can these characters get in before the story ends? I'd tell you to play a drinking game and take a shot every time this happened...but you'd be dead by chapter 7, so don't try it.

Granted, this was a One Direction fan fiction so I guess my expectations should have been ever lower then they were. I guess the only people I'd recommend this would be One Direction fans, or someone looking for 50 Shades of Grey starring teenagers. I can't think of anyone else who would be able to stomach it.

Ironic that the character is in editing...

Cause this book is so poorly edited! Get your timelines straight and minor details like leaving your phone at home and then having it. Having coffee with sugar and then preferring it black like the other co-main character? And what's with the character narration switch. So lame. More mysterious and interesting when it's one strong voice. Series is lacking! Makes me sad, I really wanted to like it. Barnes and Nobles was selling it and recommending it, and I'm concerned!

4 Unpredictable, Frenzied, Passionate, Destructive, and Addicting Stars!!

My Thoughts:

After We Collided is the second installment in the After Series by Anna Todd. The story begins right where book one ended. A startling and painful betrayal was revealed, and Tessa is devastated! Hardin is determined to prove to Tessa that he really loves her, he's sorry, and has changed. However, as more of his horrific past comes to light, Tessa doesn't know how she can ever trust Hardin again. Hardin enlists the help of Landon, his stepbrother, and Tessa's best friend, in order to win her back. However, it seems like every time Tessa and Hardin seem to be getting along and doing well, one of them end up jeopardizing their relationship. Can Tessa and Hardin overcome their insecurities, jealousy, and immaturity, in order to make their relationship work? Or are they doomed to continue the dysfunctional cycle of breaking up and getting back together over and over again.

After We Collided was filled with just as much drama as book one. The plot was extremely addictive, and I finished reading it in record time. The back and forth between Tessa got a little monotonous after a while, and I kept thinking, "what more could possibly happen?" Well, a lot could and did happen. All of Tessa and Hardin's problems stemmed from jealousy, and insecurity. Not to mention that Hardin has a horrible temper that he can't seem to control. Tessa made a few mistakes due to her own misunderstandings in this segment as well.

I am really looking forward to the next installment in the series. I want to find out what becomes of Tessa and Hardin. Not to mention, that I love the secondary characters in this series, especially Hardin's family and Landon. The ending of this sequel was dramatic, and a to be continued that has my curiosity sparked! On a side note, I love how Ms. Todd refers to classic literature in this series. She has referenced many of my favorites, especially Pride and Prejudice and Wuthering Heights. Tessa and Hardin have so much passion between them! Sometimes it's used in positive ways and other times it's used in destructive ways. My hope is that they both significantly grow as characters, because it is obvious that they love one another, and I would like to see them end up together.
