So enduring is the reputation of Marie Curie that more than 100 years after she won her first Nobel Prize, for physics in 1903 (she won a second, for chemistry, in 1911), Curie (1867–1934) is still regarded by most as the pre-eminent woman scientist of the 20th century. Goldsmith's straightforward biography illuminates both the public Curie, a tireless scientist obsessed with work, and the private one, a woman who suffered bouts of severe depression, was distant from her children and scarred deeply by the accidental death of her scientist husband, Pierre, in 1906. Mediocre

I'm working on a project about Curie, so I've read several biographies about her thus far. This book isn't absolutely terrible, but I think it handles Curie poorly. It underexplains much about her life and motivations, gives little due to the science behind her work, and goes out of its way to make her "inner world" excessively dramatic. Curie's story is amazing and fascinating, but this book sacrifices explanatory detail and historical context in favor of an emotionally simplified (and thus more boring) version of the person. Even the title is misleading -- Curie was dedicated to her work and slightly reclusive, but she was hardly an obsessive personality.

I encourage you to please check out the longer but much more engrossing biography by Susan Quinn (titled Marie Curie: A Life (Radcliffe Biography Series)), which provides the historical and scientific context necesssary to make Curie's story really come alive.

A Fascinating Biography

Obsessive Genius is an utterly fascinating portrait of a hallowed and difficult subject. If you are a fan of Goldsmith's work, (I am) you will immediately see that she is the perfect person to give Curie the complexity and dimension she deserves --as a scientist and as a woman. It's a short book which is by turns moving, informative, and intriguingly unexpected. I couldn't put it down.

Captivating

I learned of this book in the magazine section of my Sunday newspaper. I strongly doubted that a nonfiction book would be able to hold my interest for long as they can be so dry and tedious, but the topic sounded interesting, the review was promising and as I am a huge historical fiction reader I thought it might be worth a try. I am so grateful that I ran across that recommendation or I would have missed out on a real gem!

The story grabbed me in right from page one. I couldn't wait to find some free time to be able to get back to reading! While definitely written as nonfiction, the story at times reads like a simple novel with short dialogue, letter excerpts and diary entries. These personal touches add a wonderful element to the book. The scientific explanations were presented very simplistically and were easy enough to understand. They too, added a wonderful and important element to the story.

Marie Curie's life was fascinating: a woman of rare intelligence and genius, she was also plagued by severe depression (especially after the loss of her beloved Pierre) and faced the constant struggle to prove herself and receive her much deserved credit in what was a very male-dominated field. Yet despite these struggles, her devotion to science and her world-changing discoveries never diminished; they enveloped her very soul. I must admit that at times, when reading about her accomplishments and the ease at which science came to her, I felt alittle inadequate and less than intelligent. She was an inspiration!

I was very happy to discover the wonderful coincidence that while I was reading this book, the anniversary of Marie Curie's discovery of radium and radioactivity took place. I strongly recommend this book to anyone that has an interest in science, history, women's rights, medicine or just plain life!

I am giving this book 5 stars for content, is has lots and lots of really good Information.
HOWEVER, I have never seen so many typos and grammar mistakes in a published book in my life. WTF??! Did nobody proof read this??? Who publishes a book full of mistakes??? It must have been typed on a 1905 Underwood by a 3rd grader.

In 1978, Hertzfeld's world was rocked by his purchase of an Apple II; by the next year, he was working for the fledgling company on the nascent Mac as a software engineer, co-writing the Mac's operating system. Strictly for Silicon Valley-folk and Apple obsessives, Hertzfeld's short entries dwell on everything from mouse-scaling parameters to the eating habits of hardware engineer Burrell Smith. A plethora of color photos feature early screen shots and sedentary-looking Mac team members in tight t-shirts ("User Friendly!") and large glasses. Even aficionados may find their attention wandering at sentences like, "The most controversial part of the Control Panel was the desktop pattern editor, which I had rescued from its earlier standalone incarnation." About the Author

Andy Hertzfeld was a graduate student in computer science at UC Berkeley in January 1978 when he purchased one of the first Apple IIs.He quickly lost interest in grad school as he began writing programs for his Apple II, eventually leading him to join Apple Computer as a systems programmer in August 1979. He joined the Macintosh team in February 1981, and became one of the main authors of the Macintosh system software, including the User Interface Toolbox and many of the original desk accessories. He left Apple in March 1984, and went on to co-found three companies: Radius (1986), General Magic (1990) and Eazel (1999). In 2003, he developed web-based software for collective storytelling that he used to write the stories in this book. In 2005, he joined Google, and was one of the main creators of Google+.

That's what happened at Apple with the birth of the Macintosh. And that's what Andy Hertzfeld, one of the primary team members on the first Macintosh, chronicles in this book.

The summation of the folklore.org site, this book is a set of about 100 stories. Each running about 3-4 pages on average. Starting with Andy's first day at Apple and ending around the time when Jobs' was ousted in a palace coup. The stories run the gamut from the deep technical to the interpersonal. They are well written and engaging.

A must read for those inspired by the original Apple Mac engineers.

Great Read for those who started with Macs in early 1980's

How wonderful is this book? That will depend on several factors. I've read a lot of books that claim to dish out the real dirt about Apple, and this book impressed me because Andy Hertzfeld didn't write all the anecdotes himself. Instead, he created a web site at [...] and encouraged any and all persons involved with the creation of the Macintosh to document their own recollections of how it all went down. Those essays, along with dozens written by Hertzfeld himself, are now the basis of this new book, mixed in with pencil sketches, historcal photos, and old ads. This book is not about grinding axes or settling grudges. It merely documents in an objective fashion how the whole team came together, and the many many ups and downs encountered in bringing this wonderful computer to life.

What I like about this book can be summed up in two phrases. First, none of the essays exceeds five pages (roughly the length of my attention span), so I easily breezed through ninety pages of historical material without losing interest. I found myself laughing outloud at times. Second, because of the way Hertzfeld collected these stories, I truly believe that this book is not an attempt to re-write history so as to exalt himself as the God of Macintosh. While I have seen reviews of this book describe it as a coffee table book, I don't view it as a coffee table book. The essays cover technical details about how the Macintosh was prototyped and debugged, and these technical details will be above 95 percent of the people who pick up this book. Not to mention there is a lot of text.

The anecdotes in this book read quite true to me. We follow Hertzfeld from his initial hire at Apple through to his maneuvers to get himself onto the Macintosh development team. Because the anecdotes come from a variety of sources, the book really seems to fairly depict each person's role in the development of the Macintosh. For example, we've all heard Jef Raskin claim that he was the creator of the Macintosh, but this book reveals that the form factor of the computer envisioned by Raskin was nothing like the 128k Mac that ultimately arrived at retail stores, and that Raskin was put on a forced leave of absence from Apple before the machine even shipped.

Having said all these great things about the book, who is the target market for this book? I happen to have been a Mac owner since the 128k Mac was released (I passed on the 128, and waited for the 512), so this book brought back many fond memories of how the Mac changed my life and of the adventures I have had with it since its introduction. But as the foreward of this book acknowledges, most people today are computing with Windows machines and in a sense "everyone is basically using a Mac," because all the concepts implemented by the Mac team are now available in one form or another on the Windows operating system. But I don't think a Windows user would find this book of interest, as they typically don't care how the computer works or what mountains had to be moved to make the graphical operating system happen.

The book concludes with Steve Jobs removal from the Macintosh team in 1985. It provides no insight on whether the "new Apple" after Jobs' return is anything like the "old Apple" chronicled in this book. This is, of course, due to the fact that Hertzfeld was only at Apple from 1979 to 1984, so here we are, twenty years later, still reminiscing about what it was like to invent the original Mac. Hertzfeld's departure from Apple came after a six-month leave of absence, and the magic he had felt before his leave had gone away (or "grown up") by the time he was scheduled to return. So he left amicably, and went on to found three separate companies in the years that followed. Revolution In The Valley is a wonderful book to read, but I'm thinking the only people who will want to read it are those who were Apple devotees in the early 1980's, or MBA students studying where Apple went wrong with its multiple reorganizations and management shakeups. I find the anecdotes in this book fascinating, and I can't put it down. Programming geeks or budding electrical engineers will find this book fascinating. These stories are the words of real ex-employees, many speaking out for the first time, and detail the day to day travails of the people who made it all happen. But I honestly don't think my wife or my sister would spend much time with this book at all. It's just too much of an insider's look at a company that is struggling to remain relevant in a world that is very different than the world in 1984. But if you are one of the people who bought into the whole Macintosh culture in the 1980's, I would definitely recommend this book.

Part blog, part diary; completely fascinating

Written as a series of short blog-like entries, this book takes you on a unique behind-the-scenes look at what it was like building the original Mac. I found it a genuine and fascinating peek into both the "birth of the Mac" and the emerging personal computer industry as a whole. It's tough to fathom what it must have been like to write an entire operating system and applications with only 128K to work with.

Being in the software industry myself, I could identify with a lot of the programming situations and unique characters that end up in software development. It was oddly comforting to find that certain things haven't really changed that much. My favorite in this regard was a short entry about a management decision to "track progress" by entering the number of lines coded that week. One guy put down "-2000", as he had done some optimizing and was able to get rid of a lot of extra source code.

Great nuggets of information about how things came into existence. For instance, the "Command" key icon, the boot beep, and the original font names. A glimpse at what it was like to work for Steve Jobs was also captivating.

All told, a must read.

Communicants of the Old Believers persuasion--a Russian Orthodox sect dating from the mid-l7th century--the Lykov family lived so removed from the world in the Siberian taiga that only in 1978, when a party of geologists happened upon them, was their self-imposed isolation, going back to the early days of Stalinism, shattered. By the time Peskov, a Moscow journalist, made their acquaintance in 1982 on the first of what would become annual visits, only 37-year-old Agafia and her 81-year-old father Karp were still alive. Karp's sons, 54-year-old Savin and 38-year-old Dmitry, and his 44-year-old daughter Natalia all died in 1981, his wife in 1961. The story of how the Lykovs had provided for themselves, then accommodated to the incursions of the modern age is an amazing, poignant drama that Peskov reconstructs with delicacy and respect. The gift-bearing world that knocked on their door was welcome company, even as Karp and Agafia resisted efforts to return them to materialistic society. They gratefully accepted presents that eased their taxing self-sufficiency, like goats, chickens and proper footwear, but rejected such products as canned food: "We are not allowed that." The Lykovs expressed their thanks by reciprocating with gifts of pine nuts and potatoes. When Agafia journeys to newfound relatives for a month's visit, readers are perplexed with mixed emotions, at once hoping and fearing that she'll be enticed by the conveniences she's introduced to, like train travel, shops, electricity. Russian journalist Peskov here expands his Komsomolskaia Pravda reports of a family of Old Believers-members of a fundamentalist sect that seceded from the Russian Orthodox Church in the 17th century-who moved to the remote Siberian forests in 1932 to escape the modern world. It may be difficult for readers without a background in Russian history to appreciate this book. Though a cursory explanation is given of the Great Schism in the church, additional information about the Old Believers would have been useful. The sequence is problematic, the style can be awkward and repetitive, and using footnotes to clarify the Russian words dispersed throughout the text would have been helpful. Nevertheless, the Lykovs' story is memorable and should appeal to anyone interested in wilderness survival and in lives governed by faith. Although the "discovery" of the Lykovs inspired international interest and assistance, in 1991 the surviving daughter, Agafia, was still determined to remain in the taiga rather than accept invitations to live "in the world." This book was a best seller in France, and film rights have been purchased by Jacques Arnaud. Libraries with Soviet/Russian collections should purchase, and public libraries should consider.

Crowded in cities, we read about the family's decades of isolation in the Siberian wilderness. Surrounded by home appliances, we visit a household where, initially at least, matches were not allowed. Alienated and skeptical, we marvel at the strength of the family's religious faith. For the Lykovs are Old Believers whose fundamentalist Russian Orthodox ancestors left the Ukraine for Siberia's tundra in response to the seventeenth century's Great Schism; the family moved deeper into the Abakan River Valley in the 1930s and 1940s as sectarian differences and disturbing contacts with secular society convinced patriarch Karp Osipovich that salvation could only be found far from the world. Rediscovered by geologists in 1978 and brought to their countrymen's attention by Peskov's reportage, the remaining LykovsKarp, in his final years, and younger daughter Agafia, now 50build their fragile relationship with the outside world with thoughtful dignity. Schwartz offers a graceful translation of Peskov's remarkable story, which celebrates the Lykovs' threatened taiga wilderness as well as the powerful individuality of the members of this long-isolated family. When you meet the unique characters in this memorable saga, it will give strength of religious faith a whole new dimension. This family of Siberian hermits took separation from the “world” to a whole new level. I find myself almost not knowing how to think about the intensity of faith that led the Lykovs, a family of Old Believers, to live a TOTALLY secluded and independent life in the Siberian taiga for several decades from 1932 until they were discovered by geologists in 1978. “Old Believers” are those whose Russian Orthodox ancestors left the Ukraine in the 17th century because of the Great Schism - a break in the Russian Orthodox church caused by various changes being made by Tsar Peter the Great and his Tsar father before him. The Old Believers held firmly to their “sacred past” and felt Peter the Great to be the Antichrist. They believed that the only way to salvation was to separate from the world and live in the wilderness without modern conveniences. I daresay these folks are as fundamental as you will ever find.

This family of six (the two youngest had NEVER seen other humans) lived in the crudest of circumstances with an extremely limited diet (mostly potatoes, potatoes, potatoes and pine nuts) and no domesticated animals. Snow covered the ground from September and into June often. They had no salt and no milk, they got their fire from a tinderbox, and they used a torch for light. They didn’t know bread. But they shunned a lot of what was offered them in the ensuing years after they were discovered in 1978 with a firm “it is not allowed” and “the Lord will provide”.

This book was written by a Russian journalist who began yearly visits beginning in 1982. By then, only two members of the family were alive- the 81-year-old father and 37-year-old Agafia, youngest daughter. He shared their story with the world, became their staunch friend and developed a relationship with this twosome over time. This book was translated from the Russian and there is definitely some awkwardness of language which I found confusing at times, but you will want to hang in there.

The father died in 1988 at age 87; Agafia was still living alone in the taiga as of March 2010. This was an astounding read. VERY thought-provoking.

I'm giving it 5 stars simply for the amazing story of faith that it is...the writing and translation would get about two stars. The style could have been much clearer and more explanations would have been extremely helpful.

Fascinating account, great survival reference.

Religious schism and persecution are widespread in Old World's history. In the West many set off for then unknown America looking for freedom; it is only natural than in the East many marched to the remotest parts Siberia for the very same reasons. This book narrates an extreme case of withdrawal from the world, that of a family living on its own for 50 years in the taiga with no contact at all with the outside. The relate is extremely interesting on its own as a lesson on human nature. It is structured as yearly accounts of the encounters between the family and a Russian journalist.

As a survival reference the book is priceless: this people managed in an extremely harsh environment, completely on their own for decades. From a survivalist's point of view, it is the real deal. Sowing and harvesting your own hemp, spinning its fibers and then weaving your own clothes; then surviving Siberian winter on those clothes. Supplementing a monotonous diet of potatoes and pine seeds with very primitive hunting and fishing, even reaching the point of eating tree bark and leather when starving. Making almost all your utensils out of birch bark, wood or stone. Fire making with flint and steel. The book covers many interesting survival topics, tried and tested by real people in a hellish environment.

I also found of interest the very slow immersion of the family into civilized comforts as they got back in contact with society, and how their faith acted as a counterbalance in such situation. If you are familiar with the degeneracy of many natives after such a contact, you will come to be interested in this particular situation.

A must read for survivalists, and an excellent book overall.

God has put this book into my life for a purpose!

Like most men, I was clueless about how I was negatively affecting my wife through our 18 years of marriage. That is, until my wife literally crumbled in front of me and asked for a separation! A friend suggested I read this book, and it has revolutionized my thinking about a whole lot of things.
First, Ken Nair explains in clear and compassionate (non-confrontational) terms how it is our responsibility as Christian men to care and nuture our wifes as God intended--and demonstrated to us through Jesus Christ in His own relationship with the Church.
Second, Ken goes on to illustrate examples from his counceling background and it provides real hope for us men that God can work us through these difficult times if we stop, listen, and obey the Biblical underpinning of his book.
Finally, I have never found a book so easy to read, so personally challenging, so interactive, and so encouraging. I am re-reading the book to let it soak in some more! I know that if you struggle with intimacy issues (and I do not mean sexual intimacy) you must read this book and examine yourself before God. Ken leads the way, and his example in this book is so clear that it can guide any man into a postive, nuturing, and more fulfilling relationship with his wife.
I can't say I'm out of the woods yet, and I can only pray that God will continue to bring healing and restoration to my relationship with my wife (and I would covet your prayers on this), but I can't imagine where I would be right now if it had not been for this book. Very, very highly recommended.

This book opens the door to understanding and discovering how a woman thinks

Ken Nair has the amazing ability of clearly examining not only the mind of a woman, but the heart as well. Even if you are not married, but have a mother or sister, this book helps a man to understand why women are the way they are. By God's magnificent design, women are different than men. A man's logical thinking may not always understand why a woman cries, or becomes emotional over something he thinks is trivial. Ken Nair opens the door to understanding and discovering how a woman thinks.

It's not as hard as you think

If you've ever heard someone say that women are too complex to understand, you've been talking to the wrong folks. Ken Nair shows men just how easy our wives can be to understand. It's not rocket science. The women in our lives have some very basic needs, just like men do. Because we don't have the same needs, it can often be hard to understand the opposite sex, but it's not impossible. This book is the first step on the path to understanding the important women in your life.
