Somewhere near a blissful river in an alternative North America where wild animals run their own idyllic society, a tiny band of unlikely questors sets out to save their world from a deadly plague. Lizardly little Skink, head cook and tart-tongued shaman Fisher and brash young Bobcat all have heard ancestral stories about the deadly Blood Jaguar, a supernatural "Curial" who for endless cycles of beastly history has brought decimating disease upon the land. Each time the Jaguar returned, a skink, a fisher and a bobcat tried vainly to stop her, and now it's smart-mouthed Bobcat's coming-of-age turn, hung over though he is from wild catnip, to take her on. Payne's anthropomorphized animals, for all his creaky attempts to build quirky personalities and idiosyncratic dialects, are as limp as this tired old plot. Predictable obstacles, friendly but dissolving Curials and vapid villains clog Payne's muzzy message.

"To call The Blood Jaguar a talking animal fable for adults would be both true and misleading, like calling Moby Dick a whaling adventure novel. These talking animals are variously hip, intellectually subtle, cynical, mystical, and portrayed with real characteroloigcal depth. Bobcat, the main catnip-head protagonist, may be superficially reminiscent of Fritz the cat, but emerges as a true hero in the archetypal sense. The novel has plenty of humorous moments, but these water run deep. The Blood Jaguar is the sort of thing for which the word 'sui generis' was invented. A new twist on an old plot

We have all read the same story before (over and over again) -- small band of plucky heroes must travel long distances to overcome powerful bad guy. It's been done best in the "Lord of the Rings" series and countless times since. You can describe the plot in your sleep. I always enjoy books that take this approach and set it on it's ear (and I'm not talking about a "Bored of the Rings", I mean a real reworking of the plot). "Villains by Necessity" is a wonderful example of what I'm talking about, and so is "The Blood Jaguar". The principles of the story (Skink, Fisher and Bobcat) have only the vaguest clue what's going on, and Bobcat not even that. They aren't guided by any prophecy (at least overtly), they aren't "pure", they're just muddling along trying to save the world. Add to this a really nifty world set up (talking self-aware animals, reminds me of the "Spellsinger" series) and characters that you really care about (no large ensemble casts to confuse you) and you've got a funny, clever book that is very easy to read. I hope Mr. Payne will write more about this universe.

A wonderful first novel from a new fantasy author.

Every so often you find a rare surprise. That first novel that captures the imagination and holds it from cover to cover. Michael H. Payne's _The Blood Jaguar_ is just such a book. He's created a rich world of possibilities, a North America on an Earth where man never arose and the other animals did, with their lives guided by the twelve Curials. The trio of heroes, Bobcat, Skink and Fisher, are all fully realized characters whom you really feel for as they take a remarkable journey to stop the thirteeth Curial, the Blood Jaguar, from unleasing her Plague Year. Here's hoping Payne takes us back to their world for further stories.

Have you ever looked at an animal and known what it was thinking? Then a moment later you shrug and laugh at yourself for anthropomorphizing? Suppose you're not. Suppose your cat really is an irreverant catnip junky snoozing through his potential.
In Michael Payne's debut novel "The Blood Jaguar", Bobcat is exactly that. Bobcat's cohorts are equally real and equally flawed in their own ways. And, just like your house cat, Bobcat and his companions are precious and dear.
I found Mr. Payne's book to be involving, his world to be clever and original, but what I liked best about this book is the characters. They are willing to do what they must if only they knew just what that was. They shine...pretty impressive for fuzzy animals.
I can strongly recommend The Blood Jaguar. It is a gem. I hope to see a lot more of Michael Payne's work in the future.

About the Author

Robyn Ryle is an associate professor of sociology at Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana, where she has been teaching sociology of gender and other courses for 7 years. She went to Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, for her undergraduate degrees in sociology and English with a concentration in women’s studies. She received her PhD in sociology from Indiana University–Bloomington and is originally from northern Kentucky. She is a member of the American Sociological Association and has served on the editorial board of the journal Teaching Sociology. She enjoys digging in her garden, cooking what comes out of her garden, and generally enjoying small town life. She currently lives in a 170-year-old house in scenic Madison, Indiana, with her husband, Jeff, stepdaughter Grace, and two rather peculiar cats. I’m not sure I’ve ever read a bad book from Harlequin. When I’m in the mood for a solid read, I tend to reach towards Harlequin. While these days it’s hard to find an original theme in a story, what the author does with that theme makes all the difference. With The Greek’s Ready-Made Wife, the story is about a fake engagement to help along a business deal. But since we’re talking about a romance, we know that we’re going to end up with a happily ever after. This is in no way original, but Ms Faye engaged my emotions and filled the journey with enough twists and turns to make it a memorable and enjoyable read.

Kyra and Cristo end up being just what each other needs. Kyra’s a bit more free-spirited than the rigid Cristo. He needs her to pull him out of constantly thinking about work. And she needs him to be in her corner as she deals with her family. These two together just worked and I enjoyed watching as they tried to navigate their growing feelings against the situation they found themselves in. I kept turning the pages to see how they were going to finally declare their love and turn the engagement real.

All in all, this book was a pleasant weekend read that grabbed me from page one. The Greek setting added to the romance and I’m actually looking forward to returning to Greece with the next book in the series.

This is a great romance treat when you need a quick happy ever after fix. I like the theme of the ‘marriage of convenience’ that catches both parties by surprise by turning real. I never know how it’s going to come about and in The Greeks’ Ready-Made Wife I was pleasantly amazed. This story has a flavor of O. Henry’s famous theme and a bit of Horatio Alger thrown in too.

The conflict is mixed with a family betrayal, tragedy and loss, and a child’s yearning for a parent’s forgiveness and acceptance even into adulthood. The story is told by both Kyra and Cristo’s point of view, but it’s mostly through Kyra’s because her character has the most to lose and gain depending how things go.

I enjoyed watching Kyra and Cristo’s non-relationship evolve, grow and change into true friendship. I liked how Kyra slowly, gently showed Cristo that there was more to life than work and she helped him gradually understand what he really was missing in life. He might be rich, influential and driven, but he was more than that and he deserved more than what he was settling for in his life. The heroine had the most to gain but Cristo needed change the most. Their growing romance was beautiful to watch.

Another beautiful aspect of this tale was the opportunity for healing, understanding and the promise of new beginnings. The Greeks’ Ready-Made Wife is full of positive vibes and love. I enjoyed the dialogue, the sweet humor and the many leveled happy ever after. I recommend this romance story to readers who want to satisfy their need for a feel good theme; The Greeks’ Ready-Made Wife delivers.

Claiming "a lifetime relationship with Heckscher--Ohlin," Leamer argues that Bertil Ohlin's original idea offered something useful though vague and not necessarily valid; the economists who later translated his ideas into mathematical theorems offered something precise and valid but not necessarily useful. He argues further that the best economists keep formal and informal thinking in balance. An Ohlinesque mostly prose style can let in faulty thinking and fuzzy communication; a mostly math style allows misplaced emphasis and opaque communication. Leamer writes that today's model- and math-driven economics needs more prose and less math. Leamer shows that the Heckscher--Ohlin framework is still useful, and that there is still much work to be done with it. But he issues a caveat about economists: "What we do is not science, it's fiction and journalism." Economic theory, he writes, is fiction (stories, loosely connected to the facts); data analysis is journalism (facts, loosely connected to the stories). Rather than titling the two sections of his book Theory and Evidence, he calls them Economic Fiction and Econometric Journalism, explaining, "If you find that startling, that's good. I am trying to keep you awake."

Book is full of worked examples, followed by problem sets to makes sure the concepts and calculations have been mastered.
