The Power of OUR Family LOVE!

Michael Caputo does a magnificent job turning a sad story about a father's rejection of his two biological children into a beautiful story about the true meaning of family. Caputo throughout his book openly and honestly shares the emotional impact that this tragic situation had on his life. With great sensitivity he reveals to the reader how the genuine love and strong bond he had with both his mother and paternal grandmother helped to provide him with insulation from Pat Cooper's continual inability and refusal to love. The book also reveals a side of Pat Cooper that is quite opposite of what he has portrayed to his audience for years. Dear Pat Cooper is a book that reaffirms the power of FAMILY LOVE!

On a more personal note:
It was truly an unfortunate experience that both my brother Michael and I lived through. The impact of the experience has affected each of our lives in different ways. Sometimes the true reason as to why things happen is clouded by what we imagine they could have been. Through the years, and by being a mother, I have come to the realization that it would be impossible for anyone to even begin to try to rationalize the cowardice actions of any man, under any circumstances, who could turn away from his biological children and then in turn adopt another. I have rather learned that it was necessary to alter my expectations in order to truly accept and understand the emotional limitations and hypocritical actions of this man. In the words of Martin Luther King; "the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." Through the years, this man has consistently demonstrated that for whatever reason, he was only capable of achieving the emotional ability to stand as a dark shadow in our lives. I am sadly comforted in a sense to have come to accept that to have had a father who was filled with such anger and negative energy in my life would have probably been more toxic. It is ironic that through it all the one thing that we both learned from an absent father and a very present and loving mother and grandmother was the true blessings of a family. It is really a shame for him that he was not only unwilling to share in all our wonderful memories and accomplishments, but also missed out on all the genuine love that truly bonds OUR FAMILY together. These are things WE will always have, as they are TRUTHS within our heart. There is NOTHING that can take them away... not even the DECEPTIVE WORDS IN HIS INCOMPLETE, INACCURATE and SAD MEMOIR. A person can only hide behind an image for so long. Eventually, in time, the truth somehow always manages to shine through. My brother Michael's book, Dear Pat Cooper, is the ONLY one that has helped to make that happen. I know... I was there, too!

Outstanding

I really enjoyed reading this book. It's an honest, heartfelt recollection of a son's relationship with his father, or lack thereof. The author's description of his childhood in Brooklyn with weekends at the beach in Coney Island is touching. While one would think that the central figure is the author's father, it really is the grandmother, Louise Caputo. She's the ultimate Italian American matriarch who raises her children and grandchildren with love and respect. I could literally smell and taste her dinners! I laughed and cried while reading this book; the pages just kept turning as I wanted to see if there was a resolution at the end. I highly recommend this book to everyone of all ages. There is much we can learn from it.

I just finished your book. Congratulations on writing such a beautiful memoir. Not only is the story so captivating but it is written with such a clarity and flow that I found it incredibly enjoyable. So many moments in the book affected me and made me think about my relationship with my own father. The beauty of your love for grandmother and her eventual passing mirrored my own feelings towards the lose of my own grandmother. At times I wanted to reach through the book and clock your father and I wanted to reach through and put my arms around you and tell you that you don't need that man who claims to be your "Dad".
I've known you from the gym for years and now I feel as if I truly know you. From your days as a struggling actor to your current profession as a masseuse, I felt like I could empathy and relate with so much that you had written. I enjoyed your book so much I finished it in two days. Didn't want to put it down. I had no idea you worked with Geraldo and was actually a guest on the show. So many fascinating bits.
We have so much to talk about.
All the best and congrats on this fantastic work of art and life.

Whiny, goody-two shoes as a main character

Maryam is a young Saudi woman trying to decide if she is going to leave the comfort of her town and branch out on her own to go to postgraduate school. Her parents provide everything that she needs and everything at home is familiar, but she doesn't want to do the "safe" thing. She wants to prove to her mother that she can do it on her own.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I had a hard time with this book. Maryam is so whiny and pretentious. She is a goody-two shoes that has everything handed to her and she never has to do anything like work, or pay bills, or stress about where her next meal comes from. I had no idea what the point of the story was or where it was going. I really didn't like the story and nothing remarkable happened until the end.

The book just didn't flow. It seemed like she just published random days of a diary and put them together. I didn't want to finish reading the book but I made myself get through it. Maryam was a flat character who was so busy analyzing everything and herself that she couldn't develop a relationship with anyone. Other people might like this book, but I truly did not.

I hate how busy I have been lately. I don't have time to read any good books anymore. Reading used to be something that I really enjoyed but lately I haven't really had the chance. Boo. However, I recently got the chance to review the book "Road To Madina" by Alaa Alghamdi. When I heard the book's description, I was really interested:

Set in Madina, Saudi Arabia and Leeds, U.K, the novel tells the story of a young Saudi woman, Maryam, who somewhat reluctantly decides to pursue postgraduate studies in Leeds. Her hesitation stems from the fact that she is a devout and traditional person, deeply dedicated to her Muslim faith, and is initially ambivalent about leaving the world she has always known. However, encouraged by her mother, an academic who also studied and lived in the West, she ventures to this new place and encounters both enriching experiences and a sense of displacement. Her sojourn in the West leads to a new set of decisions to be made. The novel follows Maryam from the age of 22, when she is deciding to apply to study in Leeds, to her eventual return to Saudi Arabia several years later.

I have to say that this book was really interesting to me. I am a little older than Maryam in the story, but I really connected with her character and found her to be a great inspiration. I also really love to read about different cultures and connect with different ways of life than my own, and this book really gave me a lot of insight into what life is like on the other side of the world.

This was a really great story, about a girl, nervous, shy and afraid, who turns into a young woman in a relatively short period of time. It was kind of like a coming of age story. I really grew to like Maryam and want the best for her during this story. I was proud when she made good choices, and cringed when she made different ones than I would have made, but I always wanted her to succeed. This was a great book and I think it is a perfect beach or poolside read for Summer! I highly recommend it!

Wonderful Story

I truly enjoyed this book and watching the lead character Maryam grow and change. Though unsure at first about leaving home and the security she finds there. Maryam soon decides to venture beyond what she knows and finds a whole new world opened to her. She not only finds new things outside her sheltered world but she learns about herself and grows without losing what is true to her.

I loved reading and seeing this character develop and become a strong woman. I also connected with the fact that in the beginning she was unsure and even frightened to leave home. it really was a wonderful coming of age sort of story and would make a great summer read. I highly recommend this book for your reading list.

Fantastic introductdory reference book

As another reviewer noted, there are absolutely no "real world" examples in this book. But that's not really the point. This book covers many of the theorems and techniques you would need to prove asymptotic results for time series, and I refer to it almost daily. The book would be extremely difficult for someone who hasn't taken a graduate sequence in econometrics or had similar mathematical preparation.

It's the first book I look at when I want to understand the details of a concept (mixing, for example), and I wish that Davidson had included some more topics that are related to my current research... that combination should make this an ideal introductory book, even though the material is inherently difficult.

Get ready for a hard time

Yes, I know it's a standard game of reviewers to show off by describing books as "a good introduction", implying one's capability of easily absorbing the material.

I shall try to judge the book by its stated mission, viz. to be an "introduction for econometricians". In my view it isn't, the material doesn't resemble much of what you are likely to have encountered in your econometrics education. If anything it is a course in applied measure theory. I should add that I don't know how the original sources look like (e.g. Billingsley), perhaps they're even worse. I just don't see where the book is supposed to be tailored to the background and needs of econometricians (with the exception of convergence to stochastic integrals at the very end, relevant for unit root econometrics etc.). Motivation and relevant examples (e.g. links to econometrics which one might reasonably expect in view of the title) are scarce, or to put it in Davidson's words, they occur on a set with measure zero. The book is thus extremely terse. It's Theorem - Proof - Corollary at its best. The back cover even recommends the book to business econometricians also (whatever that may be). This must be a marketing gag by the publisher, as far as I can judge the business world.

On the other hand it is quite self contained, which means most concepts you need in the later parts of the book are developed (if briefly) in the introductory chapters. Davidson frequently helps you with the task of understanding the proofs (which cover an estimated 2/3 of the book) by referring you to the relevant places.

It is only fair to acknowledge that Davidson does a remarkable job of explaining the material rigorously, but just don't be fooled by the title. It's hard work, you have to spend time on each word and (there is a lot more of that obviously) (in)equality.

Happily, it's worth it. Once you're through this, some of these obscure appendices in Econometrica may at last become more accessible to you. (The converse also holds: if you have never been interested in the details of the proofs save your money.)

One-stop reading for theoretical econometricians

I worked on various theoretical problems in econometrics. When I needed some theory, most of the time Davidson's book had it. Books in probabilities and statistics have too much material and examples that econometricians don't need (for example, I read Feller, Doob, and Rao). Davidson is good not only as a reference. It develops skills necessary for econometric research. It is a must for those PhD schools that claim to be centers of excellence.

The penultimate title of C.G. Jung's 20-volume Collected Works, 'The Psychology of the Transference' is a short, seemingly complex book which readily rewards the reader who perseveres and is unintimidated by Jung's lengthy sentences, the alchemical illustrations, or the numerous passages in Latin.

Jung's subject is his discovery that the "great work" of the 16th and 17th century alchemists--a search for the 'philosopher's stone' of 'psychic wholeness' (as opposed to 'psychic perfection')--corresponds closely to the psychological process of the transference (a dynamic set of duo projections of unconscious psychic contents).

The alchemical process mysteriously corresponds not only the transference possible between psychologist and patient, but between any two individuals who spontaneously (unconsciously) constellate some part of the other's psyche through normal human interaction.

However, as with all of Jung's later work, the book's larger focus is the psychic evolution of the individual. The pivotal message of 'The Psychology of the Transference' is that the process of cautiously evolving one's consciousness to the hypothetical point of 'individuation' or 'integration,' is primarily a moral and ethical one. The book stresses that it is also a critically necessary process, however painful and potentially dangerous. In Jung's estimation, mankind has no choice but to accept the challenge of psychic evolution: the alternative is a perpetual present state of misunderstanding, hatred, suspicion, bigotry, oppression, war, and genocide.

Like Freud, Jung believed that man's psyche contains an enormous multi-tier unconscious reservoir, one which not only dwarfs man's generally narrow consciousness but is also the matrix in which consciousness originated (thus the alchemical motto "high rests on low").

The unconscious is the original abode of all drives, demons, and daimons, all instincts and angels, all creativity and appetites for destruction. Since many of its contents are unacceptable to modern man--the most foundational of these being the incest complex--these damned and rejected contexts are not and cannot be readily integrated into consciousness.

Instead, they are spontaneously projected outward onto other human beings, social classes, institutions, and countries--onto any 'object' that is perceived as other and different from the self. No man can evolve his consciousness without first becoming aware of and retracting these projections and learning to comfortably accept them as his own dark potentialities.

It is not simply of matter of leaving the instinctual man behind, but of learning to integrate the necessary if often unattractive instinctual and vital functions into consciousness before moving forward. Thus the process is one of refinement and accumulation and not one of elimination.

Only the first major step in a series (Emerson: "Every ultimate fact is only the first of a new series"), the confrontation with and integration of the 'shadow' is often a harrowing and precarious process. If man accepts this task without ample preparation, inner fortification, and secure sense of identity (which he nonetheless must be willing to forgo), he may come to despise himself, lose all motivation, become morally degenerate, or commit suicide.

But if he does not recognize, accept and take up his own cross, he will blame, and attempt to injure or destroy, other people, classes, races, or countries to eradicate the sense of indefinable angst, doubt, suspicion, and fear that impinges itself so relentlessly upon his psyche; as Jung perfectly expressed it, he will endlessly attempt to free himself of "that thing that thrusts itself tyrannically upon him in the stillness and loneliness of the night."

Only after man has accepted and integrated his 'shadow' can he, 'reborn,' proceed rightfully ahead. It is this slow process ('make haste slowly' was another motto of the alchemists) of prudent illumination towards conscious realization of the "whole man," or "self," as Jung called it, that the alchemists referred to as "the great work," the highest single achievement of which man is capable.

Thus, though the alchemists apparently sought to turn base metal into gold, "gold" was in truth a simple metaphor for successfully integrated consciousness. Clearly, most of mankind, finding the burden of unconsciousness easier to bear than the burden of conscious realization and responsibility, regrettably and understandably fails in even this initial step.

As a result, man lives in a predominantly fallen world of near-animal existence.

'The Psychology of the Transference' is one of the most concise and digestible books in Jung's oeuvre; its insights and wisdom are readily applicable to life in the 21st century. As in the balance of his previous eighteen titles, Jung presents the world as an incredible place of breathtaking depth, mystery, and meaning, most of which is lost on the average man, who typically lives in a state of permanent hibernation from objective reality.

However, Jung's worldview is also one in which nature is infinitely strange and capable of continuous unexpected manifestations, unique hybrid creations, and monsters, simply because the process of psychic evolution is not only something man must willingly confront, but because it is a process which nature inexorably demands.

It is to Jung's credit that with 'The Psychology of the Transference' he is able to present his ideas in direct, palatable, and useful fashion without dilution.

A world of readers are blindly searching for this book, and turning instead to authors like Herman Hesse and Carlos Casteneda, 'New Age' crank authors whose work is merely plagiarism of Jung, or lesser psychologists who offer up Jung's ideas in vastly diluted form. 'The Psychology of the Transference,' a deep and hopeful book, is the source to which questing readers should turn.

Alchemy and the Psychology of Inner Redemption

Yes, "transference" was originally Freud's term, but Jung's use in this 1946 essay is expanded far beyond what Freud (or anyone practicing psychology today) could possibly recognize. For Jung, transference was about a person's relation with his or her Unconscious, and the spectrum of possible relationships extends from delusion to liberating insight. Thus, transference is not just about the patient's relationship to the therapist; rather, transference is ultimately about the individual's relationship with the whole of life. After an introductory section, Jung frames his essay as a commentary on the *Rosarium Philosophorum*, an alchemical text published in 1550. The text focuses on a series of ten drawings that will assuredly appear bizarre to folks unfamiliar with alchemical symbols; however, Jung's brilliant analysis demonstrates that these apparently monstrous images actually map out, symbolically, that path to inner liberation. Indeed, this essay, late in Jung's career, represents him at the height of his powers, synthesizing symbols from a variety of sources to create a text dense with insights into the fundamental problems of human life.

ONE OF JUNG'S LAST, BUT MOST IMPORTANT PSYCHOANALYTIC ESSAYS

Jung states in the Foreword, "In this book I am concerned with the 'classical' form of transference and its phenomenology... It is not intended for the beginner who would first have to be instructed in such matters, but is addressed exclusively to those who have already gained sufficient experience from their own practice. My object is to provide some kind of orientation in this newly discovered and still unexplored territory, and to acquaint the reader with some of its problems."

Not a primary resource

Even after I read the dimensions regarding this little book, I was still surprised at how small it is. Because it's titled the Watercolor Flower Artist's Bible, I expected more information on painting watercolor flowers. It's a spiral bound book divided into color sections which shows a list of small watercolor examples of the most common flowers. There are also some nice examples of other watercolor artists work. I want to reiterate that the book is very small, which means that the pictures are small. This book could really just be used a pocket or travel guide to use for a particular flower's general shape or color but not one to study specific features of any flower.

Lots of flowers

This is a handy little spiral bound book. The first 45 pages go into the usual watercolor materials/techniques, but that is followed by a short section called "studying flower shapes" which shows you how to draw the flowers based on their shapes. Then the rest of the book is dedicated to painting more than 100 different flowers, arranged by color, demonstrated in 3-4 steps. Basically short and to the point with a few pages of beautiful paintings by artists thrown in for inspiration. Very nice for an on-the-go flower painter.

This is a wonderful little book, just the perfect size does not take up a lot of room on my work table. I loved it and spent a lot of money before I finally came across exactly the Flower painting book I wsas looking for. If you are wanting to disect flowers before you paint them, the book for you would be looking for is The Art of Plant Evolution. However if you want a good solid book on nothing but painting flowers then the Watercolor Artist's Flower Bible is the book you want.
It get's right to the point of sketching and painting flowers, it does not go into other paintings that I am not interest in, or books that I probably already purchased that tend to make one believe you are getting good sketching and watercoloring of flowers tedchniques, books that I have purchased that totally missed the point. I have truly spent a fortune on books regarding painting flowerss etc., and almost all of them have been a disapointment.
This wonderful little book goes right into "flowers" and after my first hour of sitting down sketching and painting flowers I am thrilled with the results.
Claire Waite Brown does a great job showing how the most ususal color combinations really do produce some beautiful flowers.
Before you spend another cent I hope you will save your money and make this Book your number one with learning to paint and sketch flowers. There are lots and lots of color choices that I loved and I produced some great finished results.
The illustrations are wonderful in a step by step sketch/watercolor, the print of this book is nice and dark, unlike a book I ordered earlier this week and can hardly read the print, the color combo's are wonderful, and there are lots and lots of pretty flowers in this book to whip up in no time. The pictures in this book are not sloppy with color running into color, page after page of the same thing.
I feel comfortable recommending it for purchase, I love the book. I hope you will enjoy it too!

Three classic plays translated for performers and students

Better known for translating the great Greek tragedies, Peter Meineck has now turned his pen on the comedies, with generally positive results. Like other translations published by Hackett, this one is aimed squarely at today's college students. It has plenty of historical background for those who want it, or can be read just for the plays.
Translating comedy is trickier than tragedy, because jokes are so fickle. What one society finds hilarious, another might find distasteful. Meineck does his best to render the old Greek jokes and still be funny. He doesn't always succeed. His skills at punning are not as great as Aristophanes', nor do the jokes about minor Athenian figures like Theorus and Cardopion add much to a performance text.
And these are performance texts. No matter how faithful to the original, no matter how many footnotes and endnotes the translator provides, a student should still be wary of changes made for modern performance. Today's theater operates under an entirely different set of conventions.
The plays themselves are three genuine classics, WASPS being less known than CLOUDS and BIRDS, but in this book, perhaps the best. Procleon's obsession with jury service and the headaches it causes his son translates very well, and Meineck is surprisingly adept at rendering the political understory that subliminally critizes the Athenian leader Cleon.
BIRDS is the story of two friends who come up with one of the great comic plans: a utopia named Cloudcuckooland where they, with the help of the birds, rule both the gods and men. And it works!
CLOUDS is read most often because it features a comic version of Socrates and his 'Pondertorium.' While Meineck and Introduction writer Ian C. Storey conclude the portrayal of Socrates is entirely innaccurate, it sure is funny. CLOUDS is really more of a father-son story, a father convincing his profligate son to get an education in order to argue the father's way out of the accumulating debts. What the father doesn't bank on is his son using new-learned rhetorical skills to argue that a son has the right to beat his father.
Meineck is British, so the slang in the plays is full of 'poofters' and 'arses.' I will say this much, only recently have translations of the Greek comic playwrights begun to reflect how genuinely bawdy they were. Some of Meineck's best footnotes let you in on the double-entendres.
It's all a lot of silly mischief, and in the final reckoning Aristophanes comes through loud and clear, despite such devices as rhymed doggerel passages (no rhymes in classical Greek) and confusing name translations like Makemedo. The title of this book is ARISTOPHANES I, and let us hope that professor Meineck is at work on an ARISTOPHANES II that will include some of Aristophanes lesser-known works as well as perennial favorite LYSISTRATA.

A Great book of Ancient Comedy

Clouds Waps Birds is a collection of 3 stories written by the Ancient Greek poet and writer, Aristophanes.

Clouds is the first story, and it recounts the woes of Strepsiades, who worries about paying his debts. He hatches a plan and enroll his son Phillipides in "The thinkery" a place for people to learn to argue and debate, and he seeks to use his son to fend away his creditors in court. Phillipides refuses to enter the thinkery, and so Strepsiades enters himself. He begins to learn from Socrates. He begins to lose his morals in the pursuit of beign able to win any argument he finds himself in. Soon he does get his son to enroll in the school, and his son learns to debate too, and becomes the nerdy intellectual he was afraid of becoming in the beginning. When the first creditors come to Strepsiades house, he tactically defeats them himself, all with no morals or dignity, but all by argument. But when his own son Phillipides violently beats him, he finds he cannot out argue his son, who "proves" that it is right for a son to beat his father. He blames this on the Thinkery, and in dismay, takes his slaves and attacks the school.

Wasps tells the story of two slaves awho are keeping guard over a "monster" in a house. The father of the house has a strange disease, he is addicted to law court. All medical attempts have failed, and he continues to progress in his problem. He continues to try to escape the house, even through the chimney, but fails. Then the man's friends try to free him, but at the end of the fight, he is still barely in custody. They agree to have a debate between the fater and his son, who seeks to keep him. The son is winning the debate, but the father doesnt give in, so they turn the house into a courtroom in compromise. Then the son continually fools the father into doing good, and is praised for standing up to monsters like his father

Birds tells the story of two middle aged men who are looking for the "hoopoe", a large mystical bird. When they find him, they convince the Birdland that they rule the Earth and should build a city to stand up to the Gods. The birds agree, and begin building and making laws. Once the city is finished, however, several Gods sneak into the city, and people begin to try to come there as well. Then Zeus sends a delegation to the city, and Pisthareus sends all comers packing. Finally after dismataling the delegation of Zeus, Pisthareus is hailed as a hero and is proclaimed a God and receives the scepter of Zeus.

The book is about 420 pages long, and is well translated by Peter Meineck, making it easy to read and understand. It is a great read for anyone interested in old Greek comedy, and is a wonderful read for anyone.
It makes great use of prose, and poetry, and rhyme, and also has good humor. This a book by an ancient classic writer, and lives up to such expectations.

Three early Greek comedies by Aristophanes

"Aristophanes I" brings together three of the Greek comedians earliest extant comedies. The legend is that when Aristophanes' comedy "The Clouds" was first performed in Athens in 423 B.C., his target, Socrates, stood throughout the performance so that everyone in the audience was aware that he was there and hearing what was said of him. The portrait of Socrates clearly satirical and most critics consider it to be inaccurate. But Aristophanes is making fun of Athens' renowned "Think-tank" the "Phrontisterion," the school where the rich young men of Athens were taught the fine art of rhetoric. Instead of anything lofty the comic poet suggests the primary purpose of such an education is to be clever and out-reason greedy creditors. This is an especially good translation of the play, which includes insightful notes and essays on both Old Comedy and the Theater of Dionysus that helps readers understand the conventions of staged comedy at the time of Aristophanes.

In this comedy Socrates is consulted by an old rogue, Strepsiades (sometimes translated as "Twisterson"), who is upset with the mountain of debts his playboy son Phidippides, who loves fast horses and fast living. Phidippides agrees to go to Socrates' school of logic where he can learn to make a wrong argument sound right. After graduation is able to use the system of "unjust logic" to outwit his father and kick him out of the family home. The Chorus of Clouds comments on the proceedings and in the end the Phrontisterion is burned to the ground by Strepsiades. The flaw of the play is Aristophanes is trying to satirize the Sophists, who were popularizing a new philosophy that denied the possibility of ever reaching objective truth, he picked the wrong target. The Sophists were mostly teachers who were not native to Athens, such as Isocartes and Gorgias. "Sophist" basically meant teacher, so while Socrates was a "sophist" he was not a "Sophist." Twenty-four years later, when Socrates was condemned to death for "corrupting the youth of Athens," the only accuser he said he could name was a certain "comic poet" who renamed nameless.

The version of "The Clouds" that has passed down to us is not the original version, which was defeated by Cratinus' "Wine Flask" at a comedy competition during the Great Dionysia celebrations. We know this is a revised version because the Chorus complains about Aristophanes finishing third in that competition. However, critics assume it is essentially the same play, albeit a more polished version. Once you forgive Aristophanes for his unfair characterization of Socrates, "The Clouds" is a great comedy employing all of his standard tricks of the trade from fantasy and ribaldry to funny songs and obscene words.

"Wasps" ("Sphekes") appeals to contemporary audiences because it satirizes the litigiousness of the Athenians. Actually, the play, produced in 422 B.C., is more about the permanent tensions between conservative and liberal politics. Aristophanes is attacking the practice of the politician Cleon's exploitation of the large subsidized juries used in by the Athenian legal system. Bdelcylen ("Cleon-hater"), representing the position of the playwright, maintains that pay for public service is the device of demagogues to purchase loyalty. His father Philocleon("Cleon-lover"), a mean and waspish old man who has a passion for serving on juries, represents the Athenians.

Bdelcylen arranges for a court to be held at home to hear Philocleon's stupid little case of accusing the dog of the house of stealing cheese. The old man is cured of his passion for juries, becoming a drunkard instead. The best scenes in "Wasps" are Philocleon's attempts to escape when Bdelcyclen locks him up and the scene where the poor dog is tried. Certainly this play is representative of Aristophanes as a reformer, who wanted to persuade his audiences to change their foolish ways by ridiculing them on stage.

The problem with "The Birds" ("Ornithes") is that for once Aristophanes does not seem to be attacking some specific abuse in Athens. Still, we suspect that even this little fantasy is not simply escapist entertainment. Certainly there are those who see it as a political satire about the imperialistic dreams that resulted in the disastrous invasion of Sicily (which happened the year before his play was produced in 414 B.C.). Then again, this could just be Aristophanes bemoaning the decline of Athens.

Pisthetaerus ("Trusting") and Euelpides ("Hopeful") have grown tired of life in Athens and decide to build a utopia in the sky with the help of the birds, which they will name Necphelococcygia (which translates roughly as "Cloud Cuckoo Land"). Pisthetaerus and his feathered friends have to fight off those unworthy humans, malefactors and public nuisances all, who try and join their utopia. Then there are the gods, who come to make some sort of agreement with the new city because they have created a bottleneck for sacrifices coming from earth. Because it is a more general satire, "The Birds" tends to work better with younger audiences than most comedies by Aristophanes. Besides, the chorus of birds lends itself to fantastic costumes, which is always a plus with young theater goers.

In studying any of the Greek plays that remain it is important to I have always maintained that in studying Greek plays you want to know the dramatic conventions of these plays like the distinction between episodes and stasimons (scenes and songs), the "agon" (a formal debate on the crucial issue of the play), and the "parabasis" (in which the Chorus partially abandons its dramatic role and addresses the audience directly). Understanding these really enhances your enjoyment of the play.
