Enjoyed the story but not the editing.

While I enjoyed the story and would have given it a 4 star rating, the editing is atrocious. There are missing words, added words and incorrect words throughout. While it is readable, it would be even more so if edited properly.

Fun and perfectly SILLY!

The Phantom of the Bathtub is a book that friends of mine have been passing around for some time. Because of everything they said about it, I just couldn't wait for my turn to read the treasured and tattered copy. After buying my own copy on Amazon, I must say that my friends were right. This is a perfectly nutty book that is not destined to become a classic -- except among friends who recommend it to each other.

Consider this my recommendation, friend! You are in for quite a bit of entertainment and will probably pass your copy on, as well.

The Phantom of the Bathtub has that special something that only a special audience could enjoy!

Spooky Romance...something different

I really enjoyed this book and finished it within a couple of days. Romance aside, the writing was good and description of the hauntings actually gave me the willies. Though it did feel a little clich�d at some points this did not detract from the storyline and characters for me. Heroine was the perfectly cool and independant type...however I will confess to being a little disappointed with the male lead...he was not as complex as first promised. Fun with a couple of twists...I especially loved the feel of 'Savannah' that pratically oozed off the page.

Overall I would definately recommend and look forward to reading more from 'Eugenia Riley'.

thought-provoking and easy to read

I bought this book because it seemed to get to ideas I've been using in my latest painting project. Turkle gives a very nice and brief introduction to how she became interested in objects as a path to philosophy and ways of thinking about the world. The vignettes are rather random and I think quite beautiful. This is not a book that will have a great final point. It meanders and allows you to make associations and hopefully draw some conclusions about your own life and the objects in it. I also like that the book itself is a wonderful object. About the size of a hymnal or some other type of book meant to be held and easy to carry around. A very nice book as a gift for someone who has too many things!

"Evocative Objects" -- insightful and absorbing

This book is a gem. In this collection of essays, the authors reflect on how a seemingly simple object - a rolling pin, a train, a pair of ballet slippers - can serve as an emotional marker and play a powerful role in understanding relationships, life transitions and loss. I'll recommend this book to my book group because it should prompt a lively discussion about the evocative objects of the members.

It's a mistake to believe that things are "just" things

This is an unexpectedly delightful yet seriously thoughtful book that invites you reexamine your relationship to objects, about which, you seldom, if ever think.

It's a collection of essays written by humanists, designers, scientists and artists--thoughtful individuals--that disclose the fluidity and complexity of being alive by revealing their very personal relationships with objects as mundane as a rolling pin and as banal as comic book superheroes.

Each essay is paired with writings from philosophy, history, literature and theory which resonate with the essay in ways that illuminate both what the essayist is saying and what he or she means.

Each essay, in a very different way, demonstrates why it is a mistake to assume that objects are nothing more than inanimate collections of atoms and molecules. They show instead that objects can be and often are capable of evoking potent emotional responses dealing with grief, fear, loss, love, hatred, abandonment, intellectual curiosity, poverty and existence.

From the essay MURRAY: THE STUFFED BUNNY

Before the essay the paired writing offers this: "To get to the idea of playing it is helpful to think of the preoccupation that characterizes the playing of a young child. The content does not matter. What matters is the near withdrawal state, akin to the concentration of older children and adults. The playing child inhabits an area that cannot be easily left, nor can it easily admit intrusions. This area of playing is not inner psychic reality. It is outside the individual but it is not the external world. Into this play area the child gathers objects or some sample derived from inner or personal reality...[Thus] in playing, the child manipulates external phenomena with dream meaning and feeling [And] there is a direct development from transitional phenomena to playing, and from playing to shared playing, and from this to cultural experiences." --D. W. Winnicott, Playing and Reality

The essay is about the experiences of a little girl with an actual stuffed bunny and explores how, at first, she finds it no different from "the rest of the pastel objects" of her world. As you follow the story you learn how the little girl (the author's sister) develops the idea that a she can love a bunny.

Next you come to understand how she deals with the separation anxiety associated with the realization that when she begins nursery school she won't be able to take Murray with her. Later you learn how the little girl infuses Murray with a life of his own in a utopian setting with provinces and capitals and a complicated topography. And finally the author reveals this about Murray: "...he has given me a ringside seat at the performance of Shayna's imagination, even as I remind myself that in fact it was she, as his creator who bought me the ticket to that seat."

This book will make you laugh and cry, say WHAT(?) and oh yeah, I know exactly what that feels like. I found reading it like riding an intellectual rollercoaster that forced me to reexamine not only objects but my relationship with and to them.

The book begins and ends with an essay by Sherry Turkle which adds to the reading experience and further illuminates how and why objects, can and do become powerfully evocative.

I recommend this book without reservation.

Starting with the physiocrats, Heilbroner summarizes schools of economic thought, and profiles some leading exponents of each. Temperamentally an interventionist, the author nevertheless reveals some glaring weaknesses in Utopian economic thought.
His chapter on Fourier and the French philosopher's attempt to sell a business plan for some rich capitalist to fund a phalangerie system of society is very interesting, and captures the dilemma of so many meliorist thinkers who fail to convince a critical mass of society to buy into their plans to revolutionize society.
His treatment of communism is doctrinaire, with not much focus on the need for a rabid, ruthless minority to force the rest of society to accept Marxist theory and practice.
The book ends with meditations on Galbraith, and the now-quaint prescriptions for government power to "countervail" private economic power in allegedly free market economies.
The great strength of this book is not whether you agree or disagree with any of the theories profiled by Heilbroner, but that he presents them in a compelling way, relates them to the real people who expressed them distinctively, and creates the desire to learn more. That was Isaac Asimov's definition of what it means to learn.
This book is very good for younger readers who need a challenge.

About the Author
Marilyn B. (Marli) Cole, MS, OTR/L, FAOTA,�is a Professor Emeritus of Occupational Therapy at Quinnipiac University, Hamden, Connecticut, and an Occupational Therapy Consultant. After 25 years of teaching, she has now become a full-time writer. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Connecticut, a graduate certificate in occupational therapy from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Bridgeport. Also, she is licensed by the state of Connecticut to practice occupational therapy and is certified by the Center for Study of Sensory Integrative Dysfunction to administer the Southern California Sensory Integration Tests. She has more than 24 years of practice experience in mental health, pediatrics, and geriatrics. Places of employment include Eastern Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute in Philadelphia, and Middlesex Memorial Hospital, Lawrence and Memorial Hospitals, and Newington Children’s Hospital, all in Connecticut. While teaching, courses included psychiatric clinical media, group leadership, group dynamics, frames of reference, fieldwork I and II, psychopathology, sensorimotor integration, computer technology lab, evaluation, intervention, problem-based learning, research, and geriatrics. She has also served as a consultant for the West Haven VA Medical Center, the Portland Public Schools, Fairfield Hills Hospital, the Institute of Living, St. Joseph’s Manor, and Baldwin Senior Center, all in Connecticut. In conjunction with Quinnipiac University, she escorted groups of fieldwork students to clinical and community practice sites in England, Costa Rica, and Australia. � �

In addition to three prior editions of�Group Dynamics�(1993, 1998, 2005), she has coauthored two books within the past 3 years:�Applied Theories in OT�(2008), with coauthor Roseanna Tufano of Quinnipiac University, and�Social Participation in Occupational Contexts�(2010), with coauthor Mary Donohue, retired professor from NYU. Her chapters for other texts include “A Preference for Activity” (1988), “Client Centered Groups” (2008), “Retirement, Volunteering, and End of Life Issues” in Meriano and Latella (2007)�OT Interventions, “Theories of Aging” (2008), and “Occupational Theory Development and Organization” in Jacobs and Sladyk (2010)�Occupational Therapy Essentials for Clinical Competence. � �

Marli has presented papers and workshops at professional conferences on many different topics. She has delivered professional presentations to Yale psychiatric residents, the Connecticut Occupational Therapy Association, the New York State Occupational Therapy Association, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), the American Psychology Association (APA), the International Positive Psychology Association (IPPA), and the World Federation of Occupational Therapy (WFOT). � � ��

This is an excellent book for occupational therapy students in the classroom and clinical settings. It list examples of group activities outlining the seven stage group format at the same time implementing the various frames of references. This book saved me and I would recommend it to every student.

The Work of Christ - A Great Overview

R.C. Sproul's latest contribution to Biblical studies, The Work of Christ, is a solid, no nonsense overview of the life of Christ from birth to His second coming. Sproul's goal was to examine the pinnacles of Jesus's sojourn on earth in relationship to his redemptive work that He completed through the cross. But most importantly Sproul wants us to be able to understand exactly what it is that Christ did for us through his life. Sproul, through this book, reminds us that Christ's entire life was all part of the redemptive work and needs to be looked at and understood at a more profound level.

The Work of Christ would be an excellent study for a new believer or a great refresher for a seasoned saint. Each chapter examines a pivotal moment in Christ's life and the works He accomplished during that time. From Bethlehem to His return, Sproul breaks it down so we can see the importance of every aspect of Christ's works.

To be honest, The Work of Christ provided no new insights for me - it was an excellent overview - but nothing that made me stop and go "Wow". But that's okay because what I loved about this book is that, after each chapter, there is a thorough outline of the important points that you needed to understand about that section. Even better there is a series of study questions that point you to more scriptures, allowing you to expand your study, if that's what you desire. If the reader takes advantage of these end-of-chapter studies, he will get even more from this book.

The Work of Christ will benefit anyone wanting a deeper understanding of what Christ did for us. A great addition to the bookshelf of any believer.

This is a concise, but excellent account of the work of Christ. Pastor Sproul, as usual, communicates very easily the extreme importance of the work of our Lord Jesus in our behalf. Great reading!
