Not a good book for a health economics course - students will surmise that health economics is just too difficult

The book covers quite a bit of ground in health economics. The chapters mix theory and reporting of recent empirical studies. Many important concepts and details are covered.

As an introduction to health economics, used for example for an MHA or MBA course, it is just too difficult for most students. Unless the student has just had a micro course they will struggle. Even so, some new charts and concepts not typically in an intro micro course will prove difficult. Some concepts, particularly graphs, are poorly explained.

Perhaps the worst part is that beyond the first few chapters the homework becomes almost impossible for students to do on the basis of the material provided in the text content. Some exam questions in the testbank just have wrong or impossible to find answers. For example, the text mentions one noteworthy study by two economists but does not give precise results data. One of the test questions asks about the precise results data. After poring over the chapter in vain for the answer, a student finally mentioned that he was able to find the data --- in the original journal article available through Pubmed. Do the professors expect students to find answers by looking up and reading all articles mentioned, referenced, or summarized? Absurd and poor quality control. A student could waste an hour searching in vain the text for that answer.

I do not recommend professors using this book Use Santerre et al. Use the new Bhattacharya book. Etc.

Decent for a policy course, a bit lacking for an Econs course

We're using this book for an upper-div Economics course, and I felt the text was a bit too high-level (as someone else mentioned) for use in an Econs course, in the sense that it's light on mathematical application and heavier on verbosity. The book seems to try to appeal to both those studying policy, while at the same time trying to appeal to those studying Economics, and I don't personally like the style. The book does assume a little basic familiarity with economists' tools and shows models, but for the most part I felt that it was just much too high-level and verbose and targeted more toward those studying the "policyer"-side of things. The result is that as someone studying Economics, I find myself a little put off by the super brief treatment of applying models and the paragraphs upon paragraphs of text. On the other side, I could see how those without much/any knowledge of economics could become confused, although I think they do a decent job of covering the basics concisely from the ground up without weighing down the text too much.

I will say that it does discuss relevant topics, and I've learned a lot of things I never knew, and am able to think about the economic side of health care in ways I never did before. I think the book could be great under the right circumstances. But chances are if you're using this for an upper-division Economics course, the problems you will solve for homework and on exams will likely cover the topics in a more advanced fashion, and the book doesn't provide enough mathematical examples and tools for that. So pray your professor distributes slides or lecture notes....mine doesn't.

This book is written at a very high level and requires extensive knowledge of economics to understand. Make sure if your professor is using this they are thorough or you will get lost.

I couldn't read this book fast enough. This series had started of smoldering and is just gets hotter as it goes!!! Cannot wait for the sixth installment of this series!!! The author has a way with words and keeps you wanting more and more!! If you are looking for a fast paced,sex filled, hot and heavy series, then look no further!!!

Talk About a Cliff Hanger!!!!!

Series story line was a great read. I like short action packed stories that are a quick read like this one. Then you move on to the next book in the series and continue on. BUT....this series has not been completed by the author and it's been a year since her last installment to this series .....I call BullSh## on these type of writers!!! Authors shouldn't be allowed to offer a series until they complete the whole package. Then they can still release them over a predetermined length of time, not just stop the series with zero explanation and no ending....Not Cool and certainly not Professional.

This is the first comprehensive account of Azerbaijan's rich and tumultuous history up to the present time. The Azerbaijan Republic is situated where ancient Media once stood, a territory invaded and influenced by Persian king Cyrus the Great, Alexander of Macedonia, and Pompey's Roman legions. Since the early nineteenth century its Muslim Turkish people have been ruled by Russia, first by the imperial tsars and then by the Soviet regime. In 1990, two centuries of harsh domination culminated in Black January when Soviet troops opened fire on the civilian population of Baku. The following year, Azerbaijan declared its independence and began rebuilding its political and economic system. Former Communists and opposition leaders continue to struggle for dominance. Audrey L. Altstadt makes use of both Russian-language and Azerbaijani Turkish-language newspapers, journals, and scholarly publications. Much of this material has never been used in any other Western studies. Altstadt's original research adds the Azerbaijani perspective on the two-century relationship between Russia and Azerbaijan. She identifies key issues and actors and documents a pattern of continual struggle against colonial rule from the initial conquest to the political movements of the late twentieth century. Russian domination has encompassed more than the military, political, and economic spheres. There have also been harsh restrictions on cultural expression, including killing leading intellectuals and falsifying historical facts. However, Azerbaijani Turks continue to thwart Russian control by protecting their rich and ancient heritage through native-language education and the arts. As Altstadt writes, "the AzerbaijaniTurks use the antiquity of their history, language, and literature as a weapon of self-defense, as proof they need no tutelage in self-government, economic management, education, or literature".

About the Author
Audrey L. Altstadt received her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and has received postdoctoral fellowships from the Russian Research Center at Harvard University and the George F. Kennan Institute of Advanced Russian Studies. She conducted research in Baku, Azerbaijan, during the 1980–81 and 1984–85 and was the first American to gain access to the Azerbaijan State Historical Archives. She is currently a member of the history department at the University of Masschusetts at Amherst.

Perfect storytelling of the Azerbaijani Turks

Perfect storytelling of the Azerbaijani Turks, a growing nation of 50 million, a small portion of which was successful in restoring its independence from Soviet Union. Unlucky with its location, Republic of Azerbaijan is pretty much harassed by its northern and southern neighbors, who use its western neighbor Armenia against it. Seminal work. Highly recommended!

The Identity of the Azerbaijani Turks

The central theme of Azerbaijani Turks' political life is their relationship with the Russians. In "The Azerbaijani Turks: Power and Identity under Russian Rule," the author examines this theme through the study of Imperial and Soviet Russian central government policies and the Azerbaijani Turks' responses to them.

The origins of the Azerbaijani Turks--the correct name of the ethnic citizens of Azerbaijan--are covered here only briefly. Using Russian and Azerbaijani Turk contemporary sources that provide a bounty of relevant information, the main focus of the book is from the nineteenth century onwards, from the time of the Russian conquest to the time of its publication in 1992.

Reacting first against heavy-handed Russian military rule and later the institutionalized racism of Tsarist colonial administration, the author elucidates on the creation of an Azerbaijani Turk identity by ethnic elites keen to maintain that identity as a cultural bulwark against their Slavic overlords. Extensive study is dedicated to the brief-lived Azerbaijan Democratic Republic and the demographically devastating first decades of communist rule. "The Azerbaijani Turks" is a groundbreaking work for those who study this fascinating South Caucasus nation.

It is also deeply illuminating on the reasons why Azerbaijan has taken pains to distance itself from the Russians in the post-Soviet era. Altstadt's work also sheds light on the Nagorny-Karabagh conflict from the Azerbaijani side, laying its origins at the feet of Leninist nationalities and Soviet economic policies.

Although it could most definitely use a timely update this is a well-written, if weighty, history of Azerbaijan and its people. It is as unique by reason of the author's efforts as much as it is by being (probably, maybe?) the only book in English to cover the topic.

The Azerbaijani Turks: Power and Identity Under Russian Rule

The authors did a great job in researching a lot of historical documents, however what seemed obvious to me is that they had decided to write about such a delicate subject as Azerbaijan's history without researching sources probably other than those available in the West, in Russia and provided by Azeris themselves, who did not have that traditions of historiography, as Armenians and Georgians for instance have. As they acknowledge in the book, Aztrbaijan is a relatively new formation in the history, which in many cases explains the nature of the Soviet era Azeri interpretation of the history, which among others aimed to justify Azerbaijan's geopolitical position, create a kind of history, which would match with the neighboring countries with really " old" histories.
That is why heavy influence by Azerbaijani sources does not help the authors much to fairly present the history of Azerbaijan (both past and present) and especially its relationship with Armenia and Armenians. In the bibliography I noticed 1-2 Armenian sources among hundreds that they used. There are lots of Armenian ancient sources (Armenain ancient historian Knorenatsi, for example) that could be used. Presentation of events in Sumgait and Baku seem also very biased and heavily influenced by Azeri official position. I follow Azeri media for the last 7 years and the identity of your position with the Azeris was unfavorably striking.
Anyway, I would like to thank them for the interest in the region. I just wish they had a more thorough analysis of the available historical data and more balanced approach in presenting their thoughts.

Great book, great writing

What a terrific story, it's one of those "can't put down till the last page" kind of books, so be warned. Great writing with only a very few typo's should they annoy you. I just didn't want it to end and that must be one of the best recommendations I can make.

Once again Lori King has a winner!!

Sidneys Triple Shot is wonderful! From beginning to end, I was entranced and taken on a ride of emotions. From the beginning where Sidney is abused to where she finds the moment to escape unnoticed, all the way to making a life with three of the most sinful men, a author can dream up.
Sidney endures a lot of heartache and takes a stand to protect herself from anymore abuse. Running as far as she can, she finds herself a job at the Triple Shot. A bar owned by three ex Marine brothers. Over a short amount of time, she finds herself attracted to the trio. While she battles her feelings of fear, inadequacy, and lust, her ex finds her. Which forces her to accept the brothers protection, and their dominant natures. They want to protect her, Sidney wants to protect them. A series of events will make or break their relationship. The men are intent on showing Sidney, that not all men are like her ex, and that she can love again.
Noah is the rock, whom she feels at ease with. Tyce makes her laugh again, her intensely passionate joker. Xavier, the most serious of the bunch, fights his own nature and is afraid of scaring off the already skittish Sid.
The three personalities placed together make her weak at the knees. Can she let go of her fears, and let these men protect her and give her everything she has never had? Love, trust, family..Read and find out!

An emotional, sensual ,amazing read that you won't be able to put down

This is such an amazing story a roller coaster of emotions.......it takes you on an incredible journey of one woman....how she has to overcome the hurt,fear and anger she has had to endure in her life to finally find the love and family she has longed for.......She finds it in three amazing brothers.....she just needs to let go of her fears and take what she wants....

Sidney Rowe's life has never been easy for her....from growing up in foster care where she was never given any type of love and affection to being tossed out into the streets when she turned of age to take care of herself....

She meets a man who she falls in love with and thinks she has found someone to build her family with.....things take a dramatic turn when she moves in with him....he becomes a different person then who she knew ....taking over all aspects of her life from who she is friends with to what clothes she wears....and then turns violently abusive, physically and mentally. She has no family to turn to ,no friends ,she is stuck In this life forced to take what he does to her...
Until the day he takes away something more precious to her then her own life...and in the end almost succeeds in killing her....

Sidney goes on the run hoping that Robert will never find her....after weeks on the run she lands in a little town called Apache Crossing....she needs work ,she decides to inquire on a bar tending job at Triple Shot....little does she know walking into that bar will change her life forever.....

Noah Dawson the youngest of the three brothers ....and the first to meet Sidney....Noah is the sweet and kind man the romantic ,he stands well over six feet tall with his longer curly brown hair and his eyes that are a beautiful aqua colour which show all of his emotion
He knows he wants her ....it doesn't matter that he just met her he knows she has secrets ,and knows he can't let her walk out of the bar, he has to have her in his life....and whatever secrets she has he wants to make them all go alway,protect her and love her forever....

Tyce Dawson the middle brother and also lead singer for the band Texas Knights which headlines at Triple Shot , he is the typical playboy with his shoulder length hair and his sapphire blue eyes he is sex on a stick....he is no stranger to woman falling all over him...and he has never wanted a serious relationship....But Sidney is different and he wants her for keeps....

And finally we have the eldest brother Xavier Dawson..... With his rugged good looks...from his tanned skin to the short buzzed hair and his ice blue eyes that can see straight into your soul, He is a Dominant man ,he needs to be in control, he wants Sidney to submit to him in the bedroom and he just prays that with the trauma she has been through that she will be able to. He hopes she can be that woman for him.....

When the four of them come together it is explosive ,emotional and sexy as hell.....the bond that they create together and separately one one one is magic in the making.....its Love ....and with three ex marines when they make Sidney theirs it's for life....They will protect her at all cost even with their own lives....and when her ex catches up with her...this relationship, their love is put to the test..... She is terrified she will never see them again.
That the love that she has finally found will be stolen from her......

A specific approach...

This guide might be good for people specifically trying to balance a diet with exercise for a specific weight-loss plan. The author gives some specific meal ideas, which is nice, but this book doesn't match up with the philosophy I was looking for, nor should it be considered a comprehensive "ultimate" guide. The author recommends protein powders and Splenda as a sugar substitute, so after that I honestly tossed this book (before finishing) because I was looking for basic nutritional information and a more holistic approach. If artificial sweeteners and processed supplements fit your lifestyle and you want a diet guide for weight-loss, you might enjoy this book. If your focus is holistic health, lifestyle and wellness, this book misses the mark.

Excellent....but if you own The Frugal Diet this is a repeat

I found the nutritional advice in Mr. Schiemer's book to be a breath of fresh air and very do-able! However, the information included in this book is expanded upon in his title "The Frugal Diet". In fact, I have to say that this title is an exerpt.

The Frugal Diet has this exact information, PLUS SOME! It also includes many more recipes that I think you are really going to enjoy.

One of the things I liked most about the advice given (on eating) is ...it takes into account that we are, in fact, living in 2011. We ARE NOT cavemen, and DO have to face the temptations of processed food every day.

Some may frown upon his limited use of artificial sweeteners or caffeine...but overall his approach is much more do-able than others that I have read. (and much healthier than the average American diet) Do yourself a favor and read his advice...either this title or The Frugal Diet!
