Designed as a wide-ranging guide to Domain Specific Languages (DSLs) and how to approach building them, this book covers a variety of different techniques available for DSLs. The goal is to provide readers with enough information to make an informed choice about whether or not to use a DSL and what kinds of DSL techniques to employ. Part I is a 150-page narrative overview that gives you a broad understanding of general principles. The reference material in Parts II through VI provides the details and examples you will need to get started using the various techniques discussed. Both internal and external DSL topics are covered, in addition to alternative computational models and code generation. Although the general principles and patterns presented can be used with whatever programming language you happen to be using, most of the examples are in Java or C#.

About the Author
Martin Fowler is Chief Scientist at ThoughtWorks. He describes himself as “an author, speaker, consultant, and general loudmouth on software development. I concentrate on designing enterprise software—looking at what makes a good design and what practices are needed to come up with good design.” Fowler’s books include Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture; UML Distilled, Third Edition; and (with Kent Beck, John Brant, and William Opdyke) Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code. All are published by Addison-Wesley.

Well written but not comprehensive

As usual, Fowler delivers a very well structured book, easy to both read and use as reference material. He is a very able and pragmatic writer and that shows in this book.

However, I can't consider this book a good text because of the things it omits. This is a book about designing DSLs and this task is one of the things functional languages excel at, but Fowler establishes in the introduction that he is going to happily ignore all things related to functional programming and never looks back. Anyone interested in designing DSLs owes it to himself to research Haskell, Scala and F# as they are vastly superior to Java in this respect.

Fowler has been one of the best at writing about OO design and approaches this book in the same way, sadly he hasn't upgraded his knowledge to include other paradigms that in this case address the problem at hand better.

the book is like a good conversation providing an overview of why one would seriously consider using a DSL and the major approaches that one might consider. It provides a good framework for further learning. I was hoping he would develop his examples, which are good, in more detail.

As an occasional user of lexx/yacc and a frequent developer of rules engines - this book filled in many gaps and answered many whys. My next rule engine will make use of a DSL utilizing many of the patterns described.

Growing up in Spanish Harlem, Chino knew he needed three things to survive: a solid friend (his pana), a decent nickname--not some lame thing his parents had called him, like Tito or Googie--and a reputation that he would rather lose a tooth or get his ribs broken than back out of a fight. With the help of Sapo, "the meanest and ugliest kid on the block," Chino manages to make it as far as college before his life is endangered. He even attracts the attention of Nancy Saldivia, a beautiful Pentecostal girl so genuinely devout that she has earned the high school nickname "Blanca." In a typically vivid passage at the start of his debut novel, Bodega Dreams, Ernesto Qui�onez writes: Blanca wasn't allowed to wear jeans but she made up for it by wearing tight, short skirts. She always carried a Bible with her and never talked bad about anybody and at school she only hung around with her Pentecostal friend, Lucy. YA-Willie Bodega, a man of middle years, heads a syndicate that organizes the economics, justice system, and politics in Spanish Harlem. He works toward his dream of creating a rising professional class of Puerto Rican citizens with the aid of a tiny cadre of powerful, ultimately traitorous, friends. Using the voice of a barely post-adolescent youth to tell the tale of Willie's undoing, Qui-onez gives readers pitch-perfect characterizations, crisp dialogue, and plenty of action. Chino is newly married to a pregnant Pentecostalist who holds herself above barrio politics. He and his wife attend night school, work, and struggle to pay the rent. Chino's wild boyhood friend introduces him to Bodega, in a roundabout way, and against all of his better instincts, Chino begins to work for Bodega, dreams with him, and, in the end, takes his place. Realism and romantic adventurism are neatly bonded here, making this a book for eager and reluctant readers alike. In a market that is short on Latino novels of literary merit, this one stands out and demands attention from readers from all cultural backgrounds.

Daimond in the Rough

Ernesto Quinonez' debut novel, Bodega Dreams, breaks through stereotypes, and enlightens the reader to the numerous human elements that make up El Barrio. Nevertheless, his purpose is not to explain the socio-economic group dynamic that makes up contempoary East Harlem. His purpose is to tell a good story. Unfortunately, I was expecting more of the former. As an Anglo who works in a Hispanic community, I thought the book would give me more insight into how Nuyoricans view themselves within New York's Latin American Community. For instance, the reality of inter-Hispanic relations is more complex than the author lets on. Although the subject is broached (inside the precinct house), Quinonez leaves it at it's barely scratched surface.
Although these expectations were not satisfied, my curiosity as a reader of a good novel was. Quinonez' hero, Chico, doesn't take a holier than thou attitude toward the seedier characters he meets, but accepts them for who they are: hoods, drug dealers, mafiosos, and the lowlife attorney, Navarro.
The descriptions of El Barrio are first rate. The reader gets an insider's view of Quinonez' home turf: the sights, sounds and smells that make up his neighborhood. What the author fails to do is explain why Chino's love, Blanca, a devout Pentecostal, falls in love with him and gets married at such a young age, despite his continued association with the local drug pusher, Sapo. Perhaps the courtship was edited out of the original manuscript. And although Chino seems to be a decent, inteligent fellow, how these two became married while full time college students is never satisfactorily answered. The plot was interesting, pitting the black and white concepts of right and wrong against the myriad grays that represent the realities of survival and prosperity in El Barrio. The characters of Chino and Sapo were well developed, but the lesser characters were one-sided. The social conscience of Willie Bodega, the Puerto Rican Social Activist turned drug dealer, was quite unbelievable. The dialogue was interesting, and often humorous, but oftentimes highly predictable. However, the climax was somewhat surprising, and did catch me off guard. All told, I found this to be excellent debut novel, and look forward to Quinonez' next book.

Bodega Dreams come true

Bodega Dreams is a shiny penny in the middle of nothingness. Vivid characters and fresh dialogue. Ernesto Quinonez has succeeded in accomplishing a novel that spills out sad and beautiful truths without worrying about who its spilled on. This book is reminiscent of authors such as Piri Thomas, Junot Diaz and Abraham Rodriguez Jr. but Mr. Quinonez is still able to carve his own niche into the land of Latino Literature.

Brings Back Memories of Spanish Harlem

Bodega Dreams brought back alot of memories of growing up in Spanish Harlem (Carver Projects) during the 70's and 80's. Each time I read something that would trigger a memory, I would read the section to my husband (a wonderful "redneck") and tell him that's how it was while I was growing up. The men playing dominoes outside, the congos being played on the streets, the pumps opened on a hot summer night, the salsa coming from the apartment windows...all of it brings back memories. I moved away in 1984 and moved around the country. I now call a small quiet town in Ohio home, but my family is still there. My mother still lives in the same apartment that I grew up in. I don't go back often but the memories in the book were sweet. Ernesto has captured the feel and emotions of the spanish people in harlem. For all you latinos out there, read this book...you won't be disappointed.

It's been a while since j have read a fulfilling book that you can't leave aside until you finish. It's a book That should be read by everyone who is involved in a project whether business, music or simply a life project. I really enjoyed this book, specially how the youth story about the character blends in with the main subject.

Two Trees-a story of love

I loved this book. It is a tender tale of a man who is looking to become the greatest violinist alive and needs the one and only violin that will help him get there. Stories of his past, woven with a 6th sense in the Luthier he chooses, helps create a great look at himself and his life. He discovers things about himself that have molded his life and he now can choose to stay in the hardened way he has molded or make a leap of faith into a new life with the new violin. The Master Luthier challenges him throughout the journey he takes. It is a masterful tale of mystic proportions filled with wit and grace. I just loved it. We made it the first book of the book clubs' season this last year. It was a major hit with all of us. We applaud the author and his great gift of story telling. Get this book. It will be a surprise at the end of the story. Being a cellist, I have told other musicians about this book and it is flying off the shelves. If you want to greatest instrument, you must find this Luthier to make it. You will enjoy the journey.

Master Violins, Masterful Books

I had a hard time reading this book straight through, honestly. Every time I would finish a chapter, I had a sudden urge to go play my violin, or to call my loved ones and tell me what they meant to me. This book has an uplifting power that's rarely seen in the world anymore. In a culture where anything with meaning has to be blatantly spelled out, this book is delightful in that it lets you draw your own conclusions from the information presented.

I work for a master luthier, and the depictions of the luthier are a masterful work of part reality, part legend, and part embellishment. Kevin Lee has taken the legends about luthiers, the misconceptions, and the actuality, and meshed them into an amazing fantastical composite. Yet somehow, he's done so in a manner that leaves you questioning how much is real and how much is not.

On an earlier edition of the book, the genre is on the spine and listed as "Fiction?". I think that is, by far, the best explaination of the book.

Public Relations and Morals When the Paths Cross

I ordered this book for my Principles of Public Relations class and, just like any other beginners class you just learn about half of what PR really is. It covered the basics of the subject and told the history of public relations. Which I find helpful because if you want to do PR it is important to know the history of it because, it will help you with public relations problems you may run into today.
Something that this book does inform you on is the difference between your morals and your company's morals. Your morals will be challenged in public relations, and this book shows you how to deal with it. It also has an emphasis on ethics when concerning public relations. It also applies to advertising. How you can't accept gifts and things of that nature from a company that wants to do business with you.
All in all, this book is pretty good for a beginner in public relations. You get to understand enough of it without feeling like a whole bunch is thrown at you at once.

Pretty good intro to PR book

I am minoring in Public Relations and this was the required book for the class. It is pretty straight forward and easy to understand. The layout is great and has been easy to follow.
One thing that this book could really use are examples. They only talk about PR plans and news releases, they don't show you what one looks like or how to get started. For those who haven't seen a news release, writing one can been a challenge. A PR plan is almost impossible without at least seeing an example first.
However, for just the basics this is a good book.

Guth and Marsh know what they are talking about when it comes to PR. If you are in the business or thinking about it, get this book. For excellent, clear examples, get Marsh's 'quick and not dirty guide'.
