THE NEW MEMORY MAN NOVEL!

Amos Decker witnesses a murder just outside FBI headquarters. A man shoots a woman execution-style on a crowded sidewalk, then turns the gun on himself.

Even with Decker's extraordinary powers of observation and deduction, the killing is baffling. Decker and his team can find absolutely no connection between the shooter--a family man with a successful consulting business--and his victim, a schoolteacher. Nor is there a hint of any possible motive for the attack.

Enter Harper Brown. An agent of the Defense Intelligence Agency, she orders Decker to back off the case. The murder is part of an open DIA investigation, one so classified that Decker and his team aren't cleared for it.

But they learn that the DIA believes solving the murder is now a matter of urgent national security. Critical information may have been leaked to a hostile government--or worse, an international terrorist group--and an attack may be imminent.

Decker's never been one to follow the rules, especially with the stakes so high. Forced into an uneasy alliance with Agent Brown, Decker remains laser focused on only one goal: solving the case before it's too late.

Good Writiers Develop Great Plots; Excellent Writers Create Great Characters; "The Fix" has Both & More
By Travis C
*** LANGUAGE ***

Adult English. Not a large quantity of profanities and no vulgarities, but the f-word makes two appearances. The rarity is used good to effect, but to say more might spoil the pleasure. If this were a film, I think it would be rated PG 13.

Point is, there are no graphic scenes of sex or violence.

Even though this is the third Amos Decker novel, it is a stand-alone with no cliffhanger ending. I am inclined to enjoy espionage and intrigue stories whose backdrop includes the Middle East. When they star such great, complex characters such as Amos, though, I am doubly pleased.

Perhaps I am more attracted by his vulnerabilities and sense of humor than by his strengths, just as I was by James Rockford and Adrian Monk. At times, the quirkiness is subtle, but, if you imagine Decker as he might have been played by James Garner, you'll get a kick out of him.

What follows should help you decide if your interests in reading are similar to mine.

Excerpt

“When you were describing the place as needing TLC, I sure wasn’t expecting this!”

She looked at him a bit guiltily. “This was the former building owner’s apartment. He put all the money into this space and went cheap everywhere else. The other apartments do not look like this.”

"What happened to him?”

She looked nervous. “I’d rather not say.”

"And why would that be?”

"I just wouldn’t.”

“Alex!”

"Okay, he got shot in the parking lot by some drug dealer he stiffed.”

“Shot as in dead?”

"Well, yeah. I thought that was sort of implied.”

Decker looked around. “And did he use the money he was supposed to pay to the dealer to build this out?”

"It’s not clear. But I wouldn’t worry about it. I mean, it’s not like we owe the drug dealer anything.”

"So he was never caught?”

"Well, the police had a suspect, but since there were no witnesses willing to come forward they had to let him go. The building went into bankruptcy and Melvin bought it. He got a really good deal, actually. Apparently there were no other bidders.”

"Shocking,” said Decker.

"But you like it, right?”

"Yeah, I like it. It’s a palace compared to what I’m used to.”

"I already brought my stuff up. You can move in anytime.”

"All my possessions fit inside one bag, so it won’t be a huge undertaking.”

She held out her hand. “Welcome to our new home, roomie.”

Before shaking her hand Decker said, “Let’s get a few more...'

Bottom Line

Although the plot feels like it was ripped right out of today's headlines, that is not sufficient reason to compel one to read a 500-plus page book on treason, betrayal and murder. What did keep me glued was the character Amos Decker his chemistry with Harper Brown. There is just the right touch of brilliance, combined with sarcastic wit and charm. Cannell's character, James Rockford, as portrayed by the great actor, James Garner, has some similarities, but not so many.

Anyway, this is the sort of plot and character development that I loved to read.

Five stars out of five.

Comments regarding your opinion of this book or of my review, whether favorable or unfavorable, are always welcome. If you buy the book based on my review and become disappointed, especially, I do want to know that and I want to understand how I can improve as a book reviewer. Just please be polite.

Thank you

A Good Entry Into the Series
By Bookmom \_(ツ)_/
The Fix -David Baldacci

This is a very good entry in a great series. I just wish that the series remained as good as the first book had been. This series still has potential so I am not going to give up on it.

I really recommend that you read at least the first book in this series before you tackle this one---in fact since there are only three books I would say go for reading both earlier books before reading this one. HOWEVER, you don’t HAVE to read the earlier books to get into this one – it will just make it easier on you to understand Amos Decker’s quirks and fantastical ability.

This book is total mystery with a slight dash of fantasy thrown in. A theft of our Countries secrets, spying, hacking, espionage, Russia- Middle East, murder and a story line a little too close to home/the truth for my taste! In the first book, we find how Amos came to have his ‘abilities’ and he goes from a cardboard box living, shell of a man, to this book where he is a successful part of a team that is part of the FBI and making friends. (with the possibility of a girl-friend I think!)

What slightly bothered me about this book is the fact that it (in my opinion of course) could have lost about one hundred pages of dead-horse beating, repetitive conversation that I am sure if you are in the business of crime fighting, is important but for the average reader is just annoying. I needed a tad more action and a tad less wash-rinse-repeat.

There is also one brief story-line and action sequence that I don’t see how it made the main story move forward -but perhaps this was a set-up for a future story-line.

Not a bad book at all, but not my favorite by far.

Nice Continuation of the Series
By Michael Gallagher
Before you start this book, please note it is the third book in the Amos Decker series. I would start with the first book, Memory Man, and then read the second one in the series before this edition or you won’t make much sense of the characters and situations.

Bottom line is if you enjoyed the first two books of the series you will enjoy this one, also. Baldacci picks up where he left off with the cast of characters and adds a new one to the group. He does his usual good job of changing the twists and plot lines, and trying to read faster to get to the next page because you can’t put it down: I stayed up really late to finish it because I didn’t want to put it down. I recommend this one for those who have enjoyed the series, and I’m ready for the next installment.
